Can't use them while wearing sandals. Otherwise, they are OK to use.

In the streets, if you are not intending to make a commercial use of your
pictures, you can use a tripod. It may be different in the some public
places like museums, and maybe in the metro.

But if you use a tripod, and more than two spot lights on tripods, you
will have to ask for a permit.

Perhaps you are assuming the user would apply common sense, Pat. ;-) (I
rather imagine setting up a tripod blocking passage in a church aisle or
museum right-of-way might be frowned upon, whether there were specific
laws or not!)

Official bans on tripods do exist in some railway or metro stations and
also as said in churches and museums. Sometimes also a ban against
flash-photo.
However it�so near always a local rule not a law and there are typically no
sanctions against those breaking the rules.
And as said just practice common sense, don't disturb anyone else and it�s
o.k

It quite common for use of tripods to be banned inside buildings.

But that rule will be imposed by the owner of the building, not by a city
ordnance

Supposedly, some cities or countries do have laws but don't enforce them.

Then you have venues like some cathedrals with all kinds of room
prohibiting tripods.

Took a bunch of pics at night around the Trocadero a couple of years
ago. No enforcement in that case.
