thanks in advance

For cheap you will need to book well in advance. You may also want to check
tickets availability from mid-November unless your hotel has an allocation.
For party details see
http://www.edinburghshogmanay.org/
For accomodation check the lists at
http://www.edinburgh.org/
The Edinburgh Eglinton SYHA hostel is showing 28th-2nd Jan (New Year) GBP
18.00; I could not get their online availability to work but woudl recommend
booking ASAP.

If you are travelling by train, New Year trains get busy quickly and you
should also book those fairly soon.

No. It's the Scotland-England cross-border services that get mobbed at
Christmas and New Year.
For train journeys, if you are travelling on a Standard ticket you can buy
it on the train (credit cards accepted). If you want a Cheap Day ticket you
should buy it at the station ticket office before boarding the train (unless
the station is closed or unstaffed) as the on-train staff are only supposed
to sell standard tickets.
Regular direct bus services are available to and from Glasgow Airport from
both Glasgow city centre and the Paisley Gilmour Street train station, from
early morning to late evening daily.
You can either bus/rail via Paisley Gilmour Street, or get the bus into
Glasgow:
1. Through bus/rail tickets are available between any station and Glasgow
Airport via the Paisley Gilmour Street bus link (bus number H603). There is
a Strathclyde Passenger Transport Travel Centre at Glasgow Airport.
Paisley GS to Glasgow Central is about 12 minutes. Walk or bus to Glasgow
Queen Street. Glasgow Queen St to Edinburgh Waverley is about 45 minutes.
Standard Single fare is GBP 9.70 at the moment from Paisley GS to Edinburgh.
I can't see on the Scotrail.co.uk site if that includes the airport bus to
Paisley.
2. If you get the airport bus into Glasgow city centre (bus number 905) it
will cost GBP 3.00 + the train fare, if ticketed as part of the train
journey. (You should be able to get your train ticket at the Strathclyde
Passenger Transport Travel Centre at the airport and you need to be ticketed
from GLASGOW AIR XBUS to EDINBURGH. If you can't, you can get a bus only
fare on the 905 bus, but it may not be GBP 3.00)
Train fares Glasgow Queen St to Edinburgh: a Cheap Day Single (for use on
off-peak trains) is GBP 7.80 and a Standard Single (for use at any time) is
8.60.
This is probably easier as the airport bus service (no. 905) leaves from
outside the Airport Terminal Building and runs to North Hanover Street
outside Glasgow Queen Street station, so you will be saved changing stations
and a walk through Glasgow. Bus services to the airport run approximately
every 10 minutes throughout the day (Monday to Friday) and every 15 minutes
(Saturday and Sunday).

... and the Glasgow-Edinburgh trains run every 15 minutes.
