HOLLYWOOD CA Nov. 15, 2000
A new star is coming to town and, before she has even arrived, has
already found a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Today, Princess Cruises is celebrating the announcement of Los Angeles
as the home port of its new ship -- aptly named Star Princess -- with
a $50,000 donation to the Hollywood Historic Trust, the largest
corporate donation ever made to the organization.
This generous contribution will be used to make repairs and provide
general upkeep to the stars along the world-famous Hollywood Walk of
Fame. The first star to receive attention will be that of Jean Harlow,
whose body of work includes ``China Seas'' -- an adventure, comedy,
romance film she starred in with Clark Gable that was set aboard a
ship.
``We've had ties to Hollywood for a good part of our 35-year history,
thanks to our long association with `The Love Boat' television show,
which put Princess -- and cruising -- on the map, so we're pleased to
be able to give something back to Hollywood in celebration of our new
Star Princess coming to Los Angeles,'' said Dean Brown, Princess'
executive vice president.
``Beginning in March 2002, Star Princess will offer an entirely new
type of cruise product that has never been seen here before, with an
amazing array of dining, entertainment and recreational options
allowing passengers to personally customize their vacation exactly the
way they want.''
Star Princess will offer seven-day round-trip cruises to the Mexican
Riviera.
Star Princess will be one of the largest cruise ships afloat, at three
football fields in length and rising 18 decks high. The 2,600-
passenger ship will feature three showrooms for evening entertainment,
the largest number of dining rooms of any cruise ship, a wedding
chapel, children's centers, five swimming pools and 710 cabins that
feature a private balcony.
``We are delighted that Princess Cruises has chosen to celebrate Star
Princess, and its Hollywood heritage, by making such a generous gift
which allows us to maintain and restore our No. 1 tourist
attraction,'' said Hollywood's honorary mayor, Johnny Grant. ``This is
our largest corporate contribution to date, and it will go a long way
to preserving this Hollywood icon,'' he added.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary
this year, is a veritable chronological history of the Hollywood-based
entertainment industry. In order to honor individuals behind the
camera as well as the more famous personalities, the Walk of Fame
contains many stars dedicated to the men and women who contributed to
the greatness that was and is Hollywood.
Princess Cruises, one of the best-known names in North American
cruising, is a global cruise and tour company operating a fleet of
nine ships deployed on approximately 150 different itineraries calling
at more than 230 ports worldwide. By 2004, a further six ships under
construction or on order, including Star Princess, will double the
size of its fleet to 31,340 berths.
Cruises range from seven to 72 days in length, to destinations
including the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Mexico, the
South Pacific, South America, Hawaii/Tahiti, Asia, India, Africa, the
Holy Land, Canada/New England, Bermuda and world voyages.
