What about Statendam and Rotterdam class ships?
Ben S.
I was on Veendam, they had a cafe. I don't recall if there was a fee or
not. I've been going to cafes in NYC's West Village for years. When
did they become "designer coffee bars"? Did Martha Stewart have
anything to do with that? I didn't notice the presence of Todd Oldham
in the decor. Maybe it's still ok to call them cafes and call a
Cappuccino dobio a Cappuccino dobio? :-)

On ships, perhaps with Celebrity's Cova cafe.

Yes. She's at the root of all evil :)

We just got off the Statendam on Sunday.
They still had the FREE Java Cafe with cappuccinos, lattes, biscotti, etc.
I think they were open from about 7:00 AM till 10:00 PM.

I'm not Tobie, Sylvia, but Ed & I were with Tobie and Barb.. They took the
Statendam from Vancouver to Seward, where we boarded and joined them, and
all sailed from Seward to Vancouver. It is not possible to start out in
Fairbanks unless you fly to there, travel over land or fly to the cruise
port, as Fairbanks is inland.

What time does your train leave Denali for Seward? We boarded the train in
Anchorage at 6:45AM and got to Seward around 11:15 AM. It was a spectacular
scenic route with two glass dome cars in the train..

I guess you got home all right. We really loved cruising with you on our
second week. Hope we didn't interrupt any of your plans.
I wish we were joining you on the Sleazy, but I guess we'll just have to be
satisfied with visiting with some of the folks on the Great Land Cruise in
Vegas at the end of August.
Are you going to write a cruise review on your Alaska trip? Looking forward
to seeing it.

Welcome home Tobie!! I also wish you were joining us on the Sleazy3.

Hi Tobie,
Yes, we made it home alright~the following day before noon after we left
you! What a bummer~no sleep for 34 hours. Ed is always able to sleep no
matter where he is, but I can't sleep on planes!
It was really fun cruising with you and Barb and you definitely did not
interrupt any of our plans~~in fact if it weren't for you two, we would not
have gotten any of those *dam* prizes! ;-D
Sorry you won't be with us on the Sleazy3~sure you won't change your mind?
There are too many things going on before and during the Great Land cruise,
otherwise I would love to be there! My family insists that I stay home for
my birthday, which is during the Great Land Cruise, instead of being gone
every time for the past few years as well as on Mother's Day, so I have made
a promise that I would.. Gotta make family memories, too! The last week of
July is when our son and his wife are taking a vacation in New Orleans and
we will have our two grandsons with us...Plus there are some things that
need to be taken care of around the house...
Guess what Tobie? YOU have been nominated to write the review on the
Statendam Alaska cruise because you had a back to back on it and you being
younger (boy do I hate to admit that!), your memory is better than mine!!
<vbg>
Take care and* Hi* to Barb!

I don't know yet...It says 'morning at leisure' in Denali,Then to train to
Anchorage for overnite.
Next day Anchorage to Seward...we added "Portage Lake cruise" then I believe
we bus to Seward, where Statendam sails at 8 p.m.
Some blank spots, but I'm sure it will work out:
After you got to Seward, given that HAL doesn't leave till rather late, did
you eat dinner aboard ship, or where in Seward?
Sylvia
Sylvia, from what you say, you must be spending the night in Anchorage after
leaving Denali..Then you will probably leave Anchorage @ 6:45 AM for Seward
if you are taking the train.. Although at the hotel in Anchorage, we talked
with a couple who were on a Celebrity ship and doing the Denali Land
Excursion and they mentioned that they had a train departure for Seward @
11: AM...We bought our tickets for the train over the internet before we
left for our cruise and got them for $49.pp. The cruiseline was charging
$99.pp if you got them through them... Apparently, cruiselines have a
contract with the Alaskan RR for different time schedules...We heard trains
arriving and leaving many times night and day as we were not too far from
the train station.. But if you are being bussed, we saw many Holland America
busses during our 2 1/2 days in Anchorage too... If you arrive in Anchorage
in time for dinner in the evening, try to go to Phyliss's Cafe and Salmon
Bake.. They have the BEST crab cake appetizers that we have ever eaten! They
also had Alaskan King Crab on the menu and we tried our first Alaskan brewed
beer, draft Alaskan Summer Ale, and although I usually don't care for beer,
it was light and very good!
Although we got to Seward around 11:15 AM, taxis were scarce and they called
for more at the train station..I imagine that your HAL bus will drop you off
right where you leave your baggage near the ship. From there you will walk
into a warehouse type terminal and process..It was done very quickly for
us~~total of about 5-10 minutes, as there were very few people boarding the
ship at that time. The Lido Buffet stays open for all who are
boarding..They told us that our cabin was not ready when we boarded, so we
went to the Lido Buffet to eat and wait...Tobie and Barb found us there and
told us that our cabin looked ready when they walked by it, so after eating
we went directly there...Luggage arrived about three hours later,
delivered by our stateroom steward..
Have a wonderful cruise! You will love Alaska and if I can help answer any
other questions, just ask!

we're also taking the early train to seward the day before our ship leaves.
we're doing a kenai peninsula cruise and the seavey ididaride!
Jean, any thoughts for Ketchikan? that's really the only port I haven't
done anything with. We're whale watching in juneau and renting a car and
driving to emerald lake from skagway.

Sheree, you are right...If you call the 800 number to the Alaska RR, they
will book you a reservation on that 6:45 AM train for $49.pp..Anchorage to
Seward... They need a cc # and will e-mail your confirmation to you and you
pick up the tickets at the RR station an hour before your train is to leave.
Cruise lines charge $99. for the same ticket..

I envy you!! You sound soooooooo excited!

Sheree, I thought of you while there.. We did the Duck ride! It is a very
tall, white vehicle on wheels, decorated with a duck that goes all around
the city with a tour guide pointing out all sorts of things and historical
facts for about an hour...Donald Duck comes out quacking at the Duck vehicle
in front of the "Quack Shop" which belongs to the Duck ride and has the
cutest souvenirs, such as a duck umbrella with a duck's bill and duck horns
etc.. Then it moves into the water as it is also amphibious and travels
around the shoreline... The tour guide pointed out the canneries and
explained how they process the fish...We watched the many eagles swooping
down to catch fish out of the water, were told about the two different
types of float planes we saw sitting on their ramps and several who came
over us landing and taking off...Questions were answered about things people
spotted or wanted to know about for about 45 minutes... The young lady tour
guide had a good sense of humor and was quite informative..It was fun..
Since we have been to Ketchikan three times, we had done the Totem Pole
Park, Lumberjack Show and Misty Fjords.. Some people who did the Saxman
Native Village Show seemed to enjoy it, as it dealt with Tlingit culture and
dance and included the Totem Pole Park..They had maaaany tours available in
Ketchikan to choose from... But we were sort of limited as we docked @2 PM
and left @ 8 PM.. We bought the tickets at the information center on the
dock, as we wanted to make sure it was not raining as they had predicted
earlier before we docked and they cost $34.pp... the very same as on the
ship, which was surprising! The information center must have had 20
different excursions for sale itself...Hopefully, you will have more of a
day to spend there and I wish you the glorious sunny weather that we had
while there; they say that you don't die in Ketchikan, you rust away,
because of all the rain they get! Ketchikan was the coolest of all the ports
that we visited~~the temps were only in the 70's!
How many more days, Sheree?
