I am flying to Seattle to take a 7 day cruise. In the unlikely event, if I
my luggage does not make it with me on the same flight; and the cruise is
the following day to my arrival, what happens (am I simply screwed ?).

This happened to us on a Princess Cruise in Alaska...our luggage chased us
all the way from FL to Anchorage. We got there about 11PM on the last
flight of the day, and our luggage trickled in on 3 different flights the
next morning.

We got it all, but were a bit anxious until the last bag showed about 11AM.

Did you get on port before you cruised; or one the cruise after you checked
in the cruise?

Happened to us in November.

For us an entire container full of luggage was left on the tarmac at the
airport because the plane was full and they couldn't put any more weight on
(small commuter type plane). Virtually all of the 20 or so people on the
plane were heading for the cruise, and we knew not much of our stuff made it
on board. We got to the port airport, filled out a claim form (bring
pictures of your bags, it saves a ton of time in the form filling, and make
sure your bag is clearly labeled on the outside).

When we got to the ship we let them know to add us to the list of people
whose luggage didn't make it.

The airline got our luggage to most of the people the next day, the rest of
the people the day after that. They worked with the cruise line to get them
to us.

Some ways to make it easier if it happens:

1) Make sure your bag is tagged with your name, this way if it does go lost
it may be easier for them to find

2) Get a set of the itinerary luggage tags like Magellan's sells

http://www.magellans.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=796&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=0&iSubCat=0&iProductID=796

or go to Magellans.com and search for Retriever if you can't get the link
above to work and put in day by day where you will be and how they can find
you (may be the ships number, may be the port agents, etc). Remember that
in most other parts of the world 7/12 for today is December 7, not July 12,
so you may want to spell out the month too.

3) Check in for your flight early, and double check that the tag they are
putting on your bag is specifying the correct place for your luggage to end
up. Save the claim tags, the number on them will considerably aid in
tracking.

4) Remember to pack a change of clothing, underwear, and anything else you
need the first night in your carry on

5) Don't pack a His and hers case, mix them up. This way if one goes lost,
you aren't out everything

6) Sounds like you are going to Alaska, so that won't be a problem, but if
going overseas find one of the size conversion charts before you go so that
if you do have to buy things, you can get closer to the sizes in the store.

7) Get the number of the lost luggage office you filled out the form in,
make sure you ask for the number that rings at that desk, not the 800 number
for the airport or the airline.

You have the advantage of having an extra day in Seattle, so if the bags
don't show up you have some time to get some more clothing. If you have
insurance, you need to check the policy to see what is covered, and how it
is covered. Some policies require the delay to be over 24 hours, which may
not count if you are flying in the morning and boarding a ship that evening
and your luggage arrives at the airport that evening, and some have really
lousy limits like a couple hundred dollars.

I don't understand this. How is insurance going to
get your stuff to you?

It doesn't. It reimburses you some amount (usually in the $200 range) if
your luggage is delayed for over say 24 hours and you have to get more
stuff. Of course, should your bag be totally lost or destroyed instead of
just delayed, then it's like $1,000 or so.

You still have to spring for the stuff up front and file a claim and all the
rest.

It won't get the luggage to you. Howeever, the inssurance will help defray
the cost of buying replacement clothes for those missing in the luggage.

Yes, that is what I meant. It won't get your luggage to you BUT it does
cover the costs associated with having to buy some stuff...my insurance
covers up to 200.00 pp for luggage being late 24 hrs. I get up to 1000.00
for it not coming at all. I'd hate to find out my luggage didn't make it
and I have to pay out that much money and get ZERO back.

Travel insurance you get when you book thru the TA or on your own. It
covers trip interruption, if you can't make it due to medical condtions, and
covers lost luggage, and other things too. I bought mine thru travelex
insurance.

Hi--FYI, you don't buy travel insurance if you get insurance through the
cruise line. The cruise line's insurance covers most of the same things.
Often at a higher cost, however. Various travel insurance policies can be
compared at: http://www.insuremytrip.com

If you get insurance thru the cruiseline you still pay for it and it's very
similiar to the travel insurance I bought on my own. The cruiseline wanted
99/pp and I got an entire policy covering everything for 105.00 for the 3 of
us. Much cheaper not thru the cruiseline.

Besides price, you have to look at the coverage. Some cruise line's
insurance will let you cancel for any reason and get a 75% credit towards a
future cruise. Travelex or any of the other third parties are not going to
be offering you that. If you are sure you are going on the cruise no matter
what then that may not be important. For others knowing they have an out
should something come up is worth the extra money.

You can't purchase insurance on price alone. You have to compare what
coverages you need and what it costs for those.

Yes, that is true however I refuse to pay 3x's the price for the SAME
coverage.

I've been on at least a couple cruises where I've met passengers whose
luggage didn't catch up with the cruise ship for two or three days, and
until after the first "formal" night.

I would be even more conservative and carry with me everything needed
for an enjoyable vacation which couldn't be purchased in the onboard
shops or during the first few port stops, up to the max that will fit
in an under-seat carry-on bag. This would include not only any special
medications, eyeware, and one change of clothing, but also any
hard-to-find swimsuit, under-garment and shoe sizes, that out-of-print
book you always planned to read on your vacation, etc.

IMHO. YMMV.

We make it a practice to fly into the embarkation city at least one day
ahead of time. That eliminates a lot of the risk of missing the ship
due to travel delays. Another benefit of this practice is that it
allows some time for our baggage to catch up with us if it's delayed.
That's happened one time in traveling from San Francisco to Ft.
Lauderdale. For some reason, when we changed planes in Dallas, our
luggage didn't make it. It was delivered to us the next morning at our
hotel before we departed for the ship--and my SO's frenzy ended.

We are flying one day earlier from the sailing date, but my fear is that the
luggage won't make it in the following 24 hours. But I guess any thing you
do has some risk into it. I just hope my risk is fairly low.

Unless you are making a dozen connections lost luggage usually arrives on
the next flight. It's almost always delayed, not lost, just doesn't make
the plane.
