We arrived at the Port of Tampa this past Sat., Jan. 5, expecting to take
the $18+ taxi ride to the airport to rent a car (and wondering if we'd have
to wait for a van taxi to handle all of our luggage). However, an Alamo
shuttle bus was there, and the driver cheerfully invited us to hop on without
a reservation and even refused to let us help load our luggage (which earned
him a handsome tip, of course). We enjoyed an efficient ride to the off-terminal
Alamo rental site, picked up a competitively priced car and cell-phoned our
cancellation to the rental car company with which we had reserved. The Alamo
shuttle bus driver said Saturday was the first day Alamo had offered the
port pick-up service. I didn't see any other rental car companies at the
port, and based on my pre-cruise research, including RTC'er input, I don't
think any other car rental company offers port service, although I'd think
Alamo's decision should prompt others to jump in.

Of course, because this is a new thing, you shouldn't rely on my experience
as a guarantee that Alamo will be there for you--but I'd certainly recommend
checking with them before you finalize your port transportation.

Gee what have I been taking to/from the port since 1998?? I have always
rented from Alamo and they always provided the transfers both ways each time I
have gone???

Dear Mr. Leary:

Alamo did not offer port shuttle service at the time I made my reservation--no
company I called did--and the driver did say it was the first time. Perhaps
the Alamo reservations agent with whom I spoke was misinformed? Perhaps
there was a post-9/11 hiatus? Perhaps I'm just a raving lunatic? Regardless,
your mileage did vary...thank you for providing corrected information to
the group.

I am not a mister. :) I am just stating - that I have rented from Alamo-
several times in since 1999 -not since 9-11 though. (They never did disclose
this via the reservation) and always had the free airport- dock shuttle- with
one car rental. (both ways).
