One there aren't that many sights while at sea, but that said one of my
favorite sites is the wake. you will be prime for that. Whitle the ship is
under way the rear balconies are not only often larger but they get less
wind so they are n=more pleasant on sea days. Go for breakfast on the
balcony.
An aft balcony is easily the best ... especially when up high ... where the
only bad point of engine noise is gone ...
You can't buy the feeling one feels ... late at night ... full moon splashing
on the wake ... sipping a glass of wine in a refreshing sea breeze with the one
you love next to you ...
Hmm ... maybe you did buy it ...
We've done this twice ...NCL Sky and HAL Zuiderdam ... and look to do it every
cruise ...
Be seeing you

I'll let you know when I get back from Enchantment OTS on August 21.
It'll be our first aft-facing balcony cabin. I know the balcony space
is much larger than the side facing balconies. I believe we have room
for two chaises, two chairs and two tables. On the side-facing
balconies, I think there's room for two chairs and one table, only.
The negative about the ship I'm on is that there's no aft staircase,
so I either have to use a crew stairway (which I plan to do, until
someone tells me I can't) or walk to midships to go up/down. That'll
be an inconvenience since I'm a gym rat, and expect to be making the
trip to the next deck up on a regular basis.
Anyway, we'll let you know how we like it!

We have had aft balconies on two ships, the Radiance of the Seas, with a
huge wrap around and an aft facing balcony smack in the middle on the
Westerdam ~~so we were right in the middle of the beautiful wake..The only
con about that one , IF you can even call it a con, was that we did the
Mediterranean and did not see the port that we were sailing into
sometimes..Such as the beautiful port of Valetta, Malta...but that was made
up ten fold when we sailed away and saw Malta just before and during sunset
and it was a site to behold! I say, Go for it!

We have had an aft facing cabin on the Infinity and loved it.
>Aft balcony cabins are the best.
Most of the time. Some, just a few, suck.
Give me the stern, the wake and the privacy anytime.

We had 7172 which is one stairway flight down to the booze bar.

Jo-Ann, we were on deck 4 on the Westerdam and I did not find it noisy~in
fact, we had friends visit us while the ship was moving who had a cabin on a
higher deck and they said the vibration was not any different than it was in
their cabin.. A quiet hum. I can't vouch for any other ships other than the
Westerdam and Rhapsody..I especially liked the lower deck on the Westerdam
as we were so close to the beautiful wake that trailed behind us..There was
not much movement either but the seas were very calm in the Mediterranean in
May.

God knows that you like it through the aft and the stern, baby

If your cabin is on a high deck, the engine noise should not bother you.
I had an aft cabin on the 4th deck and it was a little noisy when we
were on the balcony. We did notice more motion in aft cabins.

We put our deposit on the cruise today and we booked 7172 based on your
(Chrissy's)wonderful pictures and nice review of the room (found them using
google). We considered booking a balcony guarantee and hoping for an upgrade
to a mini-suite but thought the chances of that are remote so we booked the
room we wanted.
This will be our 5th cruise but first on RCI.
Now only 14 months to go. Sigh...

This is VERY funny.

we have had 2 of them so far, but they were corner ones. plus's are the LONG
balcony that wraps around the side. the minus was there was wind a LOT,, I
never had a breeze like that on the side balconies. probably the center aft
cabins wouldn't get the wind. I thought they were neat balconies, but didn't
care for the breeze. we didn't feel any more movement or vibration than any
other cruise.
Shaz <<< Almost all moved into new home. Still puzzled about taking Valor in
March. BUT have not asked for deposit back yet!

You know ... I'm beginning to wonder if we should not talk up bad points of the
aft balcony ... so they'll be more available to those of us who covet them ...
Here are a couple:
On Spirit class ships they get filled with soot.
On Millie class, they are visible from the upper aft deck.

>On Spirit class ships they get filled with soot.
Add to the NCL Sky (the new Hawaii Ship) also on that ... only at engine start
though ... our poor room steward was constantly out there with a bucket of
soapy water scrubbing though ...
>On Millie class, they are visible from the upper aft deck.
On th Zuiderdam ... the top floor is covered ... and private ... yet those
below are in full view ...

You will love it.
Leave it in nice condition for when Hubby and I get back to it.
Sorry if the mattress is a little, er, "flattened out".
LOL
Me too, Jean. I sailed out of Valetta on an aft balcony and it was
one of the most memorable sights in my life.
I like an aft balcony for seeing ports, because you so often sail into
port in the very early morning and, if you do sail into port during
waking hours, forward-viewing areas on cruise ships are generally much
more common and larger than aft-viewing areas. This is the big
advantage to an aft balcony IMO -- port departures, which generally
occur during daylight.

I just found a picture of the aft of the ship and have a quick question. Do
you have all of that balcony with this cabin (7172)? It appears to be a
wrap-around balcony (what's with the ladder at the end of it?). I couldn't
see any partitions in the picture...

Yes, it wraps port but the deck shortens. We tossed our wet gear
(fins, snorkel, suits etc) over there out of the way.

that's the starboard side but you get the idea.
Btw, make sure you do two things:
1) Get the cabin steward to bring a lounge chair from the pool (and/or
an additional chair) to put your feet up on and,
2) use one of the regular chairs to hold open the sliding glass door.
Turn it top to the left with feet of chair pointing to the right.
Works perfect, door never moves, all night wake and sea to die for.
Don't forget your very own "secret" portal to all goodies downstairs!
Right next to your cabin door.
Ah, BOTS, how I miss you.
She has a sweet little "waggle" of her stern when moving out from
float.

You might well avoid them in open oceans if you are prone to
seasickness. Both pitch and yaw are worse in the bow/stern of a ship.
And vibration (not engine noise) does tend to occur in the stern when
a ship turns. It doesn't bother me unless it knocks plates off the
table.
You will get thruster noise on lower decks fore and aft, which can
wake you up, generally early in the morning on an arrival. So avoid
especially the bow and stern of the lowest deck if this is a concern.
I was in the very front cabin on the Main Deck of the Rotterdam once
and the bow thrusters woke us up (but I didn't really mind, since we
got the phenomenal price of about $650 per person for a Christmas
cruise.)
A few years ago on the Golden Princess we had the last mini-suite aft - it
was side facing but the last cabin other than the aft facing ones.
We loved the cabin but weren't too crazy about the motion in slightly rough
seas (but not exdtramly rough nor stormy). We got bounced around enough at
night to wake us up occasionally, So we've avoided the aft cabins since.
Although I've been tempted to go back since the balcony's are often larger.
>We had a aft cabin on the Regal Princess. I had no problem with the motion,

Loma Prieta or Northridge? ;-)
Ah, a bit milder than either. LOL~
