Can anyone recommend a nice hotel in Amsterdam?

Of course, it should be beautiful, convenient, and cheap! Or at least
not TERRIBLY expensive. We'll be there in August.

Right on Dam Square, the Grand Tulip Hotel Krasnapolsky. It's a wonderful
place, and when we were there in October the prices were incredibly low
because nobody was traveling overseas. Do a search on the name, you will
find lots of links.

Their main page is at www.nh-hotels.com , search on Amsterdam and it's the
last one listed. We will easily stay there again if the price is right and
they have space.

We cna highly recommend the Hotel Ambassade.

It's sort of a poor-man's Pulitzer, constructed of about six interconnected
canal houses. It's on the Herengracht, about a block southeast of the
"golden bend" It's a wonderful, charming, clean hotel with impeccable
service and parlors furnished with period (16th century?) antiques. The
location is great (one of the best blocks on the second canal from the
center) Because it's constructed of 16th(?) century canal houses, there is
spotty elevator service, which may be a consideration. At the time, the rate
was about $120 USD -- the same rate for all rooms (They vary widely in size
and view -- one is actually a suite and is accessible from the sidewalk)

A friend recommended it with her highest commendation -- we've done the same
since. Each time, our friends to whom we've passed-on the advice have
thanked us upon their return!

Mark

Highly recommended.

Just for the record, <grin>, it's 17th century (the Herengracht, the canal
by which the Ambassade sits, wasn't dug until the early 17th century). I
mention this only by way of supporting the recommendation. Standard rate for
a double is probably $175 or so. Well worth it, if that it within your price
range.

We stayed at the Crown Plaza in June of 2001 after a Celebrity Cruise.
It was a nice hotel, large room and in a great location. we were on a
post-cruise deal so I am not sure of their normal rates.
