Hello again..can anyone tell me about the travel insurance that is offered
on the same site as what you order your cruise from...in our case Cruise
Value Center. Is it OK or should I go somewhere else? Marie

It depends on what they are offering and what your needs are. If they are
selling a third party such as CSA or Travel Guard (for example) and it meets
your needs go for it. Or you can go to their sites directly and order it
yourself.

For instance, I have finally decided that I really didn't need to cover the
cost of my cruise, but I do want medical and emergency evacuation with
pre-existing being covered. So I'm using CSA WebDirect Travel Protection
Plan, and if you enter $0 as the cost of the cruise you get what I desired
and at a drastically lower cost as compared to Trip Cancellation, etc. By
feeling is that I've already paid for the cruise, so I obviously can afford
it, but I couldn't handle a $25,000 evacuation charge.

I went through their online booking process just to get a quote on their
recommended insurance and the results were pretty interesting. No specific plan
provider was listed so it's almost impossible to tell for sure which plan is
being quoted but since the quote was an odd figure ($53.66) I can make some
assumptions.

#1 -- it's not the cruise line's plan because they're always in round figures
($59, $99, etc) The same can be said for most of the third-party plans.

#2 -- It could be, and probably is, CSA's WebDirect plan since that plan comes
up with quotes such as this one.

I went to CSA's web site and entered a quote request identical to what I got
from Cruise Value Center's site. The CSA quote was just a few cents off from
CVC's quote.

This raises a potential problem with how CVC is handling their online quotes.
The way the WebDirect plan is priced on the official CSA site is that you get a
basic quote for the standard plan and then you're given the option of stepping
up to their Gold plan for an additional premium if you need coverage for
pre-existing medical conditions and financil default.

On the CVC site you're not given the option of paying more to get the pre-ex
coverage. You're not even told that that's an available option. A major problem
could arise if the client goes on the assumption that if he plan is purchased
at the time of the initial deposit the waiver of the pre-ex exclusions is
automatically included, just as it is for most of the major third-party plans.

I'd be very upset if I had a claim denied because of the pre-ex exclusions and
only found out later that coverage for this was available but never presented.

The WebDirect plan in itself is a very good plan with good prices for many (but
not all) cruisers but it has to be clear that the pre-ex coverage requires an
additional premium -- something that's obvious on the CSA site but not so
obvious on the CVC site.

Note: The above is all dependent on the plan being quoted being in fact the CSA
WebDirect. If it's something else, then never mind.

Anyway, before opting to buy the plan you're probably going to have to give
them a call and get more concrete information about what you're actually
purchasing to see if it actually suite your needs.

I normaly uses Tavel Guard but if you are going on a Carnival cruise
the Carnival Cruise Vacation Protection Plan is very good. Less cost and
more coverage.

Live today...tomorrow may never come.

I just tried this website to see what would happen. I had already done
a spreadsheet by going to each carrier individually. The prices here
were higher than when I went to each website.

If I am not mistaken, CCL gets $99 for a 7 day cruise. This
is not really a very competitive rate for the typical
Caribbean cruise. There are many policies that are equal or
better than CCL's BerkelyCare and have a much lower rate,
especially if it is an age rated policy and you are not in
your 60's. For example, a rate from Global Alert for a 59
year old would be $69. This includes all the goodies such
as pre existing waiver and a really good travel delay
clause. I am sure there are quite a few policies that offer
the type of coverage I would recommend at a low fee than
the CCL rate of $99.
