My fiancee and I will be taking the Norwegian Dream cruise on October 6 from
Rome to Istanbul. We have booked our own flight into Rome and a hotel for the
night of October 5. Can anyone tell me the best way to get from Rome to the
port to catch the boat, assuming (since we did not book the flight with them)
that NCL will be no help? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And, of
course, if anybody else will be on the cruise, we'd love to hear from you.

I would check with NCL anyway. Most cruise lines will transport you for
an additional fee.

You're going to one of my favorite destinations in the world. I own a travel
agency, and suggest that you call the agent who booked your cruise. They can
arrange with NCL for your to pre-purchase your transfers from the airport in
Rome to Citavecchia. If this doesn't work out, you can always take a train
(barring that the Italian trains don't go on strike) from downtown Rome to
the ship. Your hotel may even be able to get a small van to take you there.
Cost should be about $80-90 per person roundtrip through NCL. About the same
for a van. The train is the least expensive way. Enjoy!

My wife and I are also taking the Norwegian Dream Oct. 6th. We also booked our
own flight and are staying in Rome the night of Oct. 5th. We booked
transportation from the hotel we are staying at (near the spanish steps) to
drive us to port on the 6th. Cost $85.00 u.s.
Did not want to deal with luggage! We also went with the two night stay in
Istanbul after the cruise.

I hope you post a review when you return; I'll be doing the reverse
later this year from Istanbul to Rome. Interested in ports...Linda :)

Arlene is right, many cruise lines will provide shore transportation for
an additional fee.. This may require you to get from your hotel to the
hotel the line is using for their passengers. Your travel agent should
be able to set this up for you.

Another way is to take the train. There is frequent rail service from
Rome to Citavecchia. You may need a taxi from the station to the pier..
If you have a lot of luggage you may have to handle it yourself.

A few years ago a fellow passenger told me he paid about $150 for a cab
to take him from Rome to the pier. Your hotel may be able to arrange for
a car and driver.

The train fare from Rome to Civitavecchia is about $11.00 each by comparison.

How many people can "shlep" two weeks worth of cruise stuff on a train?

Arlene <---sure knows she can't!

Don't know if its the same at the Pier, but at the Rome airport there
are 2 different kinds of cabs with significantly different prices. Or
there were 3-4 years ago, at least. I assume it probably hasn't
changed.

If you see a very helpful guy come up to you in the airport and ask if
you want a cab, he will take you to a Mercedes cab. The price to a
hotel will be like $80-100 or so.

If on the other hand, you walk outside, and go up to a yellow (Fiat or
Opal) cab, they can also take you to a hotel, for MUCH less. Maybe like
$10-20 or so. I'm not sure of the exact prices (I may be too high), but
our first time in Rome on business, we were "rookies" and took the more
expensive cabs. On our next trip, a "regular traveler to Rome" from
work was with us and told us about the yellow cabs. Again, I may be off
with the prices, but there was a significant difference in cost.

If this is not the case anymore, I apologize. It was a few years ago.

Hi all,

I live in Italy so I will try to set the record straight.
The helpful guy touting the Mercedes is pushing unlicenced cabs with no
meter or price guarantee. They are pretty good at estimating what the
market will bear.

The yellow (now being changed to white) cabs are regularly licencend
cabs with a meter and multilingual cards posted with the surcharges
applicable to the trip you are taking. Many of the official cabs are
comparable in size to a Mercedes.

Hope this helps

Jimmy
