Does anyone know if the above ship is still in operation? My wife and I
and another couple celebrated our 25th anniversary with a cruise on this
ship and had a good time (it was our first ever cruise). It was fairly
small (a converted auto carrier, I believe) and not extremely luxurious
but we had a great time. The staff was excellent and the food and
entertainment was great.

I know it doesn't compare to our recent cruise on HAL's Ryndam but I was
just curios as to what happened to it. I haven't heard anything about
it since we were on it. Does Chandris still exist?

Thanks for any info.

Dooley

Hi, Dooley

The answer to the Azur I'm not sure about - the ship may exist, but
not in her old fleet. As to Chandris lines still existing - Yes, and
no... Chandris became two brands - Fantasy and Celebrity. Fantasy
is no longer in operation (to the best of my knowledge), and the
Chandris family sold Celebrity to RCI a couple of years back - the
ships still have the big X, however (Greek letter Chi for Chandris)

Hi Dooley!

This ship still exists (and still bear's its old name) and has been the
flagship of Festival Cruises (known as First European Cruises in the US) for
several years. She's permanently based in the Mediterranean.

The cruise line's website is listed at Ken Stutt's site (the URL is in my
signature).

Thanks for the info. I have found out from another poster in this ng
that Chandris no longer exists and some of her ships have been sold to
Fantasy & Celebrity Lines. Apparently they still display the big white
x on their stacks.

It is nice to hear that the Azur is still in operation (although I
doubt that we will ever be able to sail her again) since it does bring
back memories.

Appreciate the help.

Dooley

Hi Dooley, you can find info on the Azur here
http://www.first-european.com/firstfleet.htm
I'm thinking of going on her Eastern Discoveries cruise 28/4 myself.
It's good to know you have had a good experience on her, even if that was
with a different line.

Celebrity is indeed still affiliated with the Chandris family albeit now
owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd which is owned by the Pritzker family
of Hyatt Hotel fame and Norwegian shipowner Arne Wilhelmsen. John Chandris,
former Chairman, Owner and Grandson of Chandris's founder, serves on RCCL's
Board of Directors, holds approximately 15% of the company and is still
active in the running and development of the line although not on a day to
day basis.

She's now the Royal Iris, and was last seen in Novorossiysk(russia) in July 2017 - still carrying passengers. Check this page out http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=2775106
for more details. Great ship, I worked on her in '87/88, and crossed the Atlantic :)
