What is best strategy for making cheapest phone calls back to US from
islands (st thomas, st mateen, martinique, barbados, antigua)
-- while visiting from cruise ?

As cell phone rates appear to be high, as well as ship sat phones,
looking for best option for upcoming cruise; as i need to check in
with office daily to take care of urgent messages (bane of the
self-employed service provider).

Also, do phones in islands - if pulse rather than tone, accept tone
generated xmission reasonably noise free, to enable query of voicemail
in states?

any experience, strategies, tips much appreciated

A good thing to use is the pre-paid calling cards. Use the phones in
the US islands (Key West, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, St. Croix) for better
rates. And look for things like AT&T phones if you see them.

MCI offers very good rates from most islands in Caribbean. Get their calling
card with international approval. US only cards don't work. Also they don't
offer this from all islands, i.e. Tahiti does not work. Call and check before
you cruise.
