I called by cell phone company and found out that they do not provide
coverage in St.Thomas or St.Martin. What would be the best way to call
home from there?

Thank you,
marina

Certainly on St Martin (and I would imagine on St Thomas) you can buy local
phone cards to use in public phones. There are plenty in St Martin

Calling cards. The standard 800 number access will work from St Thomas.

In St Martin, for example, the ATT access number is 0-800-99-00-11

Though a local calling card will probably be much less money. Never ever
use a telephone asking for a credit card number, they will be extremely
expensive.

You can get ATT cards from Sam's club at less than 5 cents/unit. It
can't be more than 5 units/minute to make a call from these islands.
Check the ATT web site which will give that information. There is,
however, an additional charge of up to 9 units for some payphone use.
Still, even at $1.00 for 3 minutes and $.25 per minute thereafter, it is
cheaper than using cell phone.

It may also be possible to find an internet cafe. Generally, the charge
is $1.00 or $2.00 for the first ten minutes and less thereafter. If you
have a hotmail or yahoo address, you can check it for email. We have a
hotmail address just for travel; only family has it. When I opened the
account, I specifically opted out of ALL external (spam) communications.
It is useful to put the address of each person that you expect to email
into the hotmail/yahoo address file to avoid looking it up.

Depending on where you are calling, if you are calling home establish an
800 number for your house, we have done that and on each occasion just
dialed the 800 number

Just a suggestion

Pete

I know that with adelphia you can get an 800 number assigned for no monthly
fee

I cannot tell you about St. Maartin, but I have made calls from the fantail
of a ship in St. Thomas.
