We want our 14 and 17 year old to see alot while in these ports and thought
the newsgroup would know best. We know we want to snorkle, but which is the
best between these 2 ports? Do we need to take cabs once we get off the
ship, or are things right there at the pier??

Counting the days until next Sunday.

In Cozumel the best place I know of is Chankanaab Park-great snorkeling
and an archeological/botanical park as well. A ten dollar ride from the
pier-I think $8 a person to enter. In Playa-Xcaret and Xel[ha are do
able.

I have not been to Playa del Carmen, but my family and I were just in
Cozumel last week. We had already been snorkeling the previous day in
Belize, so we opted for the Atlantis submarine ride in Cozumel. It was
expensive ($71 pp purchased on board the ship) but my kids (18 and 20)
really loved it. The crew was very professional and the sub was clean and
appeared well maintained. They take you down to a depth of 100 feet and you
get to see things you would only see if you were a certified scuba diver.
The crew will tell you that less than 1% of the population has ridden a
submarine, so you get bragging rights to something different. We chose the
sub ride excursion because it only took 2 hours and it gave us (actually the
wife and daughter) the rest of the day for shopping. Since we had agreed
ahead of time that Cozumel would be the only port (out of 4 visited) for
shopping, this worked well for us. We had lunch at a restaurant called
Poncho's Backyard and it was fantastic. I definitely would recommend it.

If you're looking for something other than beaches or shopping, you could go
to see the Tulum ruins south of Playa del Carmen. Our cruise tendered us
into Playa, then went to the pier at Cozumel. We took a bus tour from Playa
to the ruins, and back, then took the ferry to Cozumel to catch up with our
cruise. Had an excellent guide on the bus, who also took us through the
ruins. We thought it interesting and well worth it.

Since there are 4 of you, have you thought of renting a jeep? You can
see all of Cozumel in one day, and you will have plenty of time to
snorkel at Chankanaab and go to the beach at Mr. Sancho's. You will
even have time to shop in town.
