As an agent I have cancelled many cruises. If you are outside of
penalties you get back everything recredited to the method of payment.
If in pnealtiy they will take the penalty and give back the rest. If you
are under full penalty then without insurance you get nothing back.
But yes if you cancel you get back what you are due. Note that some
lines are starting to charge an administrative fee on any cancel. Regent
charges $200 for any cancel after deposit for instance.

Nice response, Joseph. I just wanted to add that some travel agents also
charge cancellation fees.

2. I canceled cruise last year when my roommate was ill and couldn't go.
Well the ship refunded all but our $500 deposit each and although I
protested that I was able to go but she couldn't. They said to read the
fine print and they would not reimburse for the deposit.
I am pretty disgusted with those companies and hope that the one I will
now use in March will be more cooperative although of course I don't
expect to cancel.
Not all travel agents charge a cancellation fee. The ones that do,
don't get my business.

That's too bad, Rosaly. I could recommend a couple of travel agents who
would do a much better job for you. There are some good ones out there,
some who care enough to go the distance for their customers.

Annie, when you said "$50.00 the travel agent charged for
making the booking", I interpreted that as a cancellation fee.
Sorry if I misunderstood.

Sadly, I've had three cancelations this week for cruises next year. In
two cases, the client was also changing addresses. I think the
recession is starting to hit Austin. And those who bought bubble
houses are paying for it.
Every one of them will receive a refund. Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines
(RCI, Celebrity and Azamara) have typically done it within one
business day.

Sigh. I know an idiot who tells all of his clients to buy insurance,
but didn't buy any for himself. But all this idiot lost was his
deposit. This idiot made final payment three days before his
beautiful, darling wife was diagnosed.

I just saw that. It's a farily new policy, isn't it? I haven't had a
request for Regent in over a year.
There are several brick&mortar agencies that charge a booking fee.

It is new this year and surprised me at how high they set it.

First of all the #2 above.... IF you have travel insurance and your
traveling companion could not go, you ahve a choice of paying the trip
and then they would refund your out of pocket due to the roommate not
being able to go. or you not going they would refunded your $500 back
if you had a pre-existing waiver penalty included. so you should have
been able to get your $$$ . As Far as 911 - that was a very confusing
time, Insurance companies Cruise lines just did not know what to do.
BUT THEY DID come around and give back or allow changing of the
cruises do to peoples anxiety that month or whatever you want to call
it. The rules changed alot then but ion the end 90% of the cruises
cancelled eventually gave $$ back or credit towards another one..

Becca, Thank Goodness my Agent doesn't do that.
I just had to cancel a cruise last week. 3 days after booking
and making full payment. A work conflict came up and there was no way
I was going to be able to sail. I was within two weeks and lost 50% of
my final payment (it was a 4day cruise). I just have to eat that and
be grateful it wasn't 100%. I haven't checked to see if the cruise
line has posted the credit yet. I have no doubt they will.
When I arrived at El Gran Porto Real, I explained my situation. The
hotel manager and front desk were understanding and supportive. They
waved the single supplement that I would have been charged for arriving
without my friend. I also got a free upgrade to an ocean view suite.
I did miss out on a transatlantic cruise aboard the QM2 due to illness.
I didn't loose any money as I was a guest of my sister, Karen. For her
it was an agent's fam trip.

They immediately refunded all but the deposit. At the same time I
added another cabin for my older son and his fiance. Carnival let us
use the amount of my younger son's deposit towards that new cabin.
And the upgrade fairy shined down on us too because that cabin I
booked for my oldest son was a balcony guarantee and they wound up
getting upgraded to a suite too. Yeah Carnival!!
