Why is Alaskan cruise good for first timer?

I would have to respectfully disagree.

Unless you're a nature buff, the glaciers and scenery will keep your interests
for 10 minutes. Then you will be bored stiff. I was.

There were so many old people onboard that the ship was dead at 10 PM. It was
like a retirement home.

No deck or pool activities either. Just less activities in general.

I disagree with you John. It sounds like you were on the wrong ship at the wrong
time.

I can't imagine how you could be bored with the majesty of the glaciers and not be
bored with all the shopping in the Caribbean? There's so many more activities
there than in the Carib too.

If there were so many old people perhaps you were on the wrong cruise ship. Sail a
different line next time and you'll find a younger crowd.

Deck & Pool activities depends on when you go. We went in early June this year and
the pool and all activities were open. It was in the mid 70's the entire trip. I
understand July & August are also warm. But we've also gone in September where it
is cooler and no pool.

But the main reason to make it a first sailing is you will find very little rough
seas when you're on the inside passage. My sister went with us this time (her
first) and she was glad for that. She didn't think she could take the ocean
movement in a Caribbean cruise.

Hi Barbara,

I was on RCCL's Vision of the Seas. That is the youngest crowd you can get for Alaska
besides Carnival's old Jubilee. I am not talking about the ports.

Just the ship activities itself. The disco is almost non-existent. Yes, the pool is
open but I am talking about organized activities. There are just less activities in
general. I guess they expect people just to watch the beauty. If you're a nature
person, you'll like it but if you're not, you'll be bored. Maybe I'm too young. Then
again, my parents were bored too.

The weather is probably too cold to have deck parties and pool activities like belly
flop contests etc.

The glacier is interesting to look at for 5 minutes and then I got bored. What's so
impressive about a big hunk of dirty blue ice. It's not even clean. It's dirty. Big
wow...

As with it being calm, it is only so when sailing in the inside passage. When we hit
open waters, it was rougher than the Caribbean.

Thanks John,I think you summed it up with the above statement, when you
start paying for your own trips, then you'll be more selective. :=)

What does that supposed to mean? I am already very selective.

<raises hand enthusiastically>

I got it! It's because a lot of people take their first cruise because
they want to go to Alaska and a cruise is such an easy way to do it,
even though they never have considered taking a cruise because they
think they will have to dance with Kathy Lee Gifford and watch beer
chugging contests at the pool.

And then, they realize how much fun cruising is and keep going.

He-he .... On our cruise last week, I renamed the Ship 'Yawn Princess'

But seriously ... we were one of maybe 10 young couples on the cruise.
Fun is what YOU make of it. We had NO problem having the pools and
hot-tubs all to ourselves. Take advantage of things like that!
