We're flying to Florida this Sunday and spending a week there prior to
sailing on Jewel OTS on 11/6. Can we lock our luggage these days or should
we do cable ties? Or neither?

Karen,

Go to a luggage store and get yourself a couple of TSA approved locks.
We've used them in the past and have had no problems. The luggage
handlers are usually happy to see them - we've had comments from a few
saying something to the effect of "I'm glad to see you're using these!
Wish more people would." The locks cost around $9.00 and I think they're
worth it.

If you have some old locks that you do not care if they cut off(if
they happen to want to see inside) then use those. If not cable ties
have been the way we have traveled since 9/11 then we put locks on
after we get the luggage from the airlines and off to the hotel,
cruiseline or wherever.

If you want to use locks, make sure you use the TSA approved locks, the
airlines have started putting up posters about them. There is no guarantee
they will not damage the bags getting them off, but there is a better chance
they will open those then break them off (though there are many stories of
them just breaking them off).

I wouldn't risk it, they are just as likely to damage the bag as they are to
just cut the lock off, so I would stick with cable ties.

Sorry, forgot to include the list of locks if you aren't familiar with what
we are talking about

Good point, but there is still no guarantee against damage to bags or
locks. Supposedly, the TSA-approved locks make things easier for the
TSA guys to examine your bag. When they do, and if you have an approved
lock, they have a key that will open them, and they are supposed to put
a card in the bag telling you that they did indeed open and inspect it.

Had mixed experience with that on a trip to NOLA in May for a Conquest
cruise. Going down, there was NO exam, no cards, and all bags (and
locks) arrived intact. On the return home, two bags (out of 4) were
inspected, per the cards, but they managed somehow to lose the lock for
one of those. So, I got back home with only 3 of the 4 locks I started
with. OK, maybe the airline damaged it or knocked it off--after 20
years of overseas travel, I've had that happen many a time. BUT, since
TSA did open the bag with the missing lock, I'm suspecting they just
carelessly didn't relock the bag. Who knows?

The TSA approved locks are normally branded "Travel Sentry". They have
a TSA code number on the bottom which tells the inspector what master
key to use to open the lock (even a comination lock). The problem
is,the cruise lines also want to open the bags for inspection, and
they DON'T have the TSA master key. I use cable ties. Keep the
scissors or knife to cut them in an unlocked outer pocket of your
checked luggage, not your carry on bag.

Maybe I've missed something along the line, but what do you mean by
"cable ties"? Doesn't sound too secure. Thanks, Helen

Those little plastic sinch ties. They are a one way locking tie that
can be small and very cheap. The best thing is to pack a nail clipper
on the outside pouch so you can snip it quicly if you have to open it
for inspection. You can even place a few more new ones flat to
replace them in the pouch as well.

Secure...not very but for some lackey baggage handler snooper, if he
has to work to open your bag he will move on to the next one that is
unsecured and just has to pull the zipper and it is open.

Or carry nail cliipers, or small blade. All is left today is to trust
the people who will be inspecting and loading/unloading your luggage.
I think the majority of these people ar ok but there is always that
one idiot.

I don't think it's possible to pack for two people for a two-week vacation,
of which 8 nights will be on a cruise, with just carry-on baggage. I'm a
good packer, but even I'm not that good! Thanks to all who replied to my
query. I think we'll go the cable-tie route and pack a nail clipper and
extra ties in a front pouch for easy access. Great idea!

We get the assorted pack of 100 8inch ties. Each pack comes in 5 assorted
florescent colors. Makes it very easy to spot your bags on the airport
carousel and at the pier after the cruise. Each pack is about $5.00

I've packed for a three week vacation with just carryon luggage twice, but both were European backpacking trips (and I did not come back with just carryon
luggage. I would likewise be unable to do it were a cruise involved..

I use some ties that are colored and have a small tag on them for
labeling purpose. If the tie is gone and the TSA tie isn't present,
someone has been in my bag and I can report it immediately.

Interestingly, the Carnival documentation still says to lock the bags.
Are you sure?

Cable ties are meant to tie electrical cables. I'm not trying to say
the obvious, but, based on some postings,I get the impression some
people think they are more esoteric or hard to find. For brightly
colored ones,go to Radio Shack. This is a two or three dollar item.
They also have them in the electrical department at Home
Depot,Lowes,et,but maybe not the colored ones.
