Hello all,

My wife and I are going to be on the Aug 21st Grand Med sailing for the
Golden Princess. We will be in Venice, Istanbul, Kusadasi. Athens, Naples,
Livorno, Monte Carlo, and Barcelona. Do any of you have any suggestions of
must see things or things we shouldn't waste our time on?

Thank in advance,

David and Amanda Proujan

Yes, you MUST SEE Ephesus at Kusadasi. We did it on our own but if the ship
offers a reasonably priced tour, go for it.. in the end we paid to join a
group. There is so much to see there and it will be helpful to have much of it
explained.

Hi,

I was in te Med years ago on the Crown Odyssey. Athens to Lisbon.

From Livorno I skipped the long trip into Florence. Instead, I took a
tour that went to the little town of Lucca. Great place with little
narrow streets and a really neat little Plazas, Cathedrals and Cafes.

Then went on to Pisa and looked at the ill conceived and poorly built
tower ;-)
This was almost ten years ago. The driver said that the Japanese would
figure out a way to fix it.

It was a trip to know that I may have been standing on the same square
foot that Sir Isaac Newton had centuries before me.

In Monte Carlo see the palace and the guards (Take the bus up and
down..I walked it),then grab the train and head for Nice...not to far
away.

Istanbul...are you sure you are going there??

Bon Voyage,
Steve in FLL

Hi Steve,

May I suggest that the bus is much better than the train between Nice
and Monaco. The road is along the coast while the train does not
offer the wonderful views.

Best regards,
Ray

Don't skip Florence. It's amazing. You can take the train yourself. You'll
see much more if you do that and book reservations at the museums ahead of
time. That way you won't waste any time standing in long lines. Pick up
your tickets and by pass every line. For details on the museums and
reserving your tickets ahead of time look at Rick Steves book on Italy. It's
excellent. In Naples the best thing you can do is go to Pompeii. We again,
took the train ourselves, spent 3 1/2 hours in Pompeii, then went to
Sorrento, had lunch then took the ferry to Capri. There is a direct ferry
from Capri to Naples for your return. It was an excellent day. Again,
details in Rick Steves book. If you want a copy of our cruise review e-mail
me for it soon. We're about to head for a 3 week vacation in Greece!

My personal choices (must sees):
Venice: Just walk around and admire the fabulous architecture, the little
piazzas, etc. Ride the vaporetto the entire length of the Grand Canal.
Istanbul: haven't been there.
Kusadasi: The ruins of Ephesus, definitely. Kusadasi's market can be fun if
you have time left over after Ephesus.
Athens: Oh, where to begin: the Acropolis, the Agora, the National
Archaological Museum, the Plaka District....
Naples: Pompeii, the Amalfi Drive.
Livorno: Florence (but you really need a week! Pisa is a much more relaxed
day-trip and you won't be frustrated by seeing so little of your
destination.
Monte Carlo: Been there twice. It does nothing for me. Personally, a bus
tour along the Upper and Middle Corniche roads to and from Nice (with a stop
at Eze, among others) would be my preference.
Barcelona: The stroll up the main boulevarded street, with the flower
merchants, etc. A walk through the old city, with its narrow, mediaeval
streets. Watch out for pickpockets and muggers!! (as in other destinations,
but Barcelona was the worst on our trip last year)
Have fun!

Well, I agree and disagree. I agree Florence is amazing and should be seen. I
don't agree that a hurried exhausting excursion from Livorno is a good way to
see it, and I wouldn't do it unless it were absolutely the only way I would ever
get there.

Florence is one of the most amazing cities on the planet, but I certainly
wouldn't want to do it from a cruise. It's the type of place you need to
stay for a few days or more, get out at night and enjoy the night life, eat
some of the best food in the world, get up early and get some breakfast, and
get a car and explore out in the countryside. It's not the type of place
you can zip in and see the David, have lunch, shop in two stores, then head
back to the ship.

If this is your first trip and you have not visited these places--by all
means, do everything!! You will be exhausted each evening (and probably
will not partake of the usual evening cruise ship activities) but at least
you will have a taste of these wonderful cities. THEN--you will be ready to
return and spend some REAL time enjoying the places and things you
especially enjoyed in each city.

Well, I *might* agree if and only if there were not another good option.
However, both Lucca and Pisa are accessible from Livorno, and either of them is
a better day trip from a cruise, IMO.

I love to cruise, but it just is not a good way to see major interior cities.
