That leads me into: Who is your favorite cruise director? Who is your
least favorite?
My least has to be Rand Woodbury on the Celebration. If you were to
meet him somewhere, he seemed to be just worn out and uncaring. He is
an excellent magician though. He put on a magic show one night that
rivaled any show I have ever seen. (I hear that he is a featured
performer on some ship today.)
My favorite CD, besides Dave is probably Robin Whats-his-name (sorry,
brain spasm right now) on our Majesty of the Seas cruise a couple of
years ago. He had great stage presence, really got into the "If I were
not upon the Seas" skit, and was great in the 50's sock hop. He just
had a great rapport with the passengers.
Any comments?
Dean
To cruise or not to cruise? That is the question...
The second name I'd toss into the hopper would be David Leveque of the
Stella Solaris. David knows his stuff when it comes to ports, is a great
organizer, has an outgoing personality, is a competent auctioneer and a darn
good violin player. He is undoubtedly the most well-rounded cruise director
we've encountered. . . and he runs a tight, good ship.

My least favorite is Gary (can't remember last name), of the Costa
Victoria. Self-absorbed, phony smile, thought he had a great singing
voice - and never missed an opportunity to perform. Reminded me of a
character out of a Mel Brooks film - over the top. Every time you turned
around, there he was - sun reflecting off his perfect teeth. I halfway
expected to find him under our bed some morning to greet us. I was afraid
after being exposed to him for a week, I would need insulin. One thing in
his favor, though - he spoke six languages fluently.
Without doubt, I put my vote in for Carnival's John Heald. He was on the
Destiny last year, has recently been on the Imagination, and rumor has it he
is going to soon be on the Elation.

I just had to respond to your posting. In a recent review I did of my Destiny
cruise, I mentioned that everyone thought our CD, Greg Kneale, was really
great. I, being a veteran of seven Carnival cruises, thought he was mediocre
at best. But, I mentioned that the best CD I ever had was.......Rand Woodbury
on the Celebration. Maybe, like you, it was because it was our first Carnival
trip and the jokes were new. But he made me laugh the whole cruise. And I
agree that he's a pretty good magician (BTW, he must be magical....doesn't he
look *younger* everytime you see him perform <vbg>????) I think he appears on
several ships each week, traveling between them.
As for the least enjoyable (this might be posted during anti-flame week and I
don't want to say *worst*), when we first cruised on the Sensation, we had
Steve Cassel. He seemed like a really zany, funny guy. Then we met him in town
and all we did was say hello. He gave us such a brush off and made it very
clear that he didn't want to be bothered by passengers. After that, we viewed
him in an entirely different light. Now lots of folks like Steve, too. So it
all boils down to a matter of perception and a person's opinions. Hope the
above will be taken in that frame of reference.
Thanks for asking an interesting question.

Actually, I did get up close to him once when he grabbed the
disembarkation sheet out of our hands as we shuffled out of the ship
yesterday.

PS
He had a real knack for remembering passenger's names. Quite amazing.
After 20+ cruises, the only CD who comes to mind is Carol (also from the
now defunct Royal Cruise Line). Why do I remember her? Because she was
a HER!

It has to be a tie for the best.
THE BEST:
From Sitmar and Princess: Mark Ianazzo
From Princess as well: Jim Everett
THE WORST:
From Princess: John Perrino (in the recent Captain's Circle magazine,
they did a feature of CD's and he was not listed as one anymore)

Cathy,
I'll also vote that John Heald is one of the top CD's. He was the
director when we were on the Ecstasy back in '92 also. He's not my
favorite one, but he is up there.

Rick Spath is indeed a cruise director on HAL. I've worked with him on many
occasions (I'm a cruiseship Entertainer) on the old Rotterdam. I understand he
will be on the Rott IV for the 1999 World Cruise. Rick's a great guy to work
with.
