Spent one short day there last week... took a drive to the other side
(French) for a few hours at the beach ... honestly the only thing I
can say is that the island itself looked kind of "neglected" ...
cars up on blocks in many yards etc... I did not have enough time
to really say for sure that this is true of the etire Island however.
The Beach was fantastic however...

Been there many, many times. My favorite spot in the Caribbean. My
favorite things to do on this island are:
Swimming and sunning at Orient Bay (spectacular beach, with white sand,
good surf, great food and drinks).
Shopping and gambling in Phillipsburg (great prices on gold, gems, and
lots of other nasty things that cater to self-indulgent types like me).

Why do so many people call it "St. Marteen"? It's Sint Maarten or St.
Martin. Ah well.
As soon as you disembark, you'll have to run a phalanx of taxi drivers
offering to take you to Orient Beach (one of the prettiest, and busiest,
beaches in the Caribbean--it's a clothing optional beach and snapping pics
or video taping the nudity is strictly forbidden).
If you want to take advantage of the duty-free privileges, know what it is
you're looking for and compare prices with those at home--they aren't always
cheaper there. If you buy Cuban cigars, smoke them before returning to the
USA as importing any products of Cuba is considered smuggling.
For fun, you can take a taxi or a bus (bus is far cheaper, and the vehicles
are the same) to the French side for some excellent dining.
Do not miss the ship--they won't wait for you.

Is it possible the French side is Sint Maaten and the Dutch side St.
Maarten?
Oh well beats the hell outta me! It's still beats Philadelphia however you
spell it.
