How does Princess feel about rolling and carrying our own luggage on to the
ship? My daughter will have a small 23" roll-on and I'll have a larger one,
plus a garment bag. Should be fairly easy to take it on ourselves. Since we
have first seating, I prefer to know all my luggage is there in my cabin early.

Yes, you can bring carryon luggage aboard. The porters get the big stuff before
you get on usually. But they Xray everything before it gets on & a few times I
have seen them open the luggage.

If your luggage is locked, how can they open it without your permission?

Did you have travel insurance? The insurance I just bought for my cruise in
December is supposed to cover my luggage for up to $1500.00 in loss or
damages.

Hi Ken,

You are with your carry-on luggage. It is inspected and x-rayed as
you get on the ship. They do not open checked luggage unless you are
present.

Best regards,

Actually, I didn't mean just carry-ons. I meant all our luggage, which will
only consist of one roll-on 23 incher and my larger roll-on suitcase.(not sure
of size--maybe 32 inch) , plus a garment bag. I figure it can't be that bad
lugging this stuff on, just to know we'll have it in our cabin early.

Do you realise how inadequate that is for replacing everything you
take on the cruise?

My SO and I had our three bags probably stolen the last night on the
ship. I did a full inventory of everything in those bags, and $1500
wouldn't have come close. $1500 per bag, would be much closer (if
we are talking replacement cost).

And we had *no* real valuables to speak of in there (I carry those in
my backpack with me), except some cheap binoculars (I don't consider
$50 things "valuables").

Hi Asya,

If you would like to be insured for the full value, there are
supplemental policies available.

Don't know about Princess, but read a post on another group where a girl
was upset because Carnival would not let her carry her own bags on
board. She said they would not let her board with anything larger than
her carry on and she was upset because she wanted the security of
knowing her luggage would get to her cabin with her. She said they
"insisted" on getting her a porter, also she did not have any small
bills to tip and ended up having to tip more than average?

I'm a light packer, I know there is no way I'll be packing $1500.00 worth of
clothing, and my suitcase itself only cost $80.00, so I'm not worried about
it.

Hi Len,

It would be very chaotic if everyone insisted on bringing their
luggage on with them on large ships. Think about how few could get on
elevators with all of their luggage. There really is a method to the
madness. They have been handling large crowds boarding their ships
for a long time.

Our Princess cruises had our luggage deliverd well before 5PM. Last
cruise they were there as we were meeting our cabin steward (by noon).

At the airport our luggage was taken to the ship by the cruiseline so
we never saw it til we were aboard.

And, actually, we've always had our luggage delivered right away when we sailed
Carnival, as well. I was just wondering about Princess and if it's wise to take
it on ourselves (especially if we have early seating.) I'll go ahead and take
our carry-ons and let the porter do the rest. Thanks!

You want to roll a 32 inch suitcase yourself? I'd advise against it,
unless you really want everyone to hate you. You will slow everyone
and everything down in best case, and end up hurting someone with it
in worst case.

In an earlier post I noted that I'll leave the larger suticase to the porters
and take the carry-ons with me. :)
