On October 10th we fly to San Diego and we have thus far managed to save
about $200 off of the HAL hotel package by staying at the Holiday Inn Harbor
View, and we are looking for places to visit and eat.
We want to go to Coronado so that I can show Danni the hotel that was used
in the making of "Some Like It Hot" Our hotel is right off of the airport
so a cab to Coronado is not an expense.
But where can we go for lunch and where can we go for dinner?

The Gaslamp district is not far away and has tons of great food. At the top
of Horton Plaza (the downtown mall) is a wonderful Chinese restaurant, the
Panda Inn (not to be confused with little takeout places with similar
names).

Hi everyone,
I will second Clint's recommendation. You can eat in the covered
outdoor area and have a very casual meal or eat inside with glass
walls. Either way you can see the ships at the cruise terminal.

I am not sure when we arrive in San Diego. The flight schedule keeps
changing and there are two non-stops. The first gets in at 10:19AM local
and the other at 12:52PM local PT.
If we are on the second flight, by the time we get to Coronado it will
probably be too late to lunch.

The last time we rented a car was in Honolulu in 1999. We had to take a cab
downtown to the hotel, and once we had the car we had to try to figure out
where to park it, and then got lost trying to find Roy's restaurant. Then
we had to try to figure out how to return the car in the dark after the sun
went down.
Taxis sound like a good idea this time. <BG>

Dick,
Post this in sdnet.eats. You'll get lots of excellent suggestions!

Couple of thoughts. There are several Italian resturants in the Little Italy
area at the Date and India intersection. For breakfast my wife and I found a
real dive that advertises itself as the oldest bar in SD. It's the Waterfront
on Kettering Blvd(several blocks up from the bay). Full breakfast ofr $3.50.
Some of the locals come in and drink their breakfasts. Within a short walk
from the cruise pier are a number of resturants.

Cab will probably cost you $20 one way. Boat trip is more fun. Boat
goes to the old Coronado Ferry Landing, which has a couple of nice
places by the water to eat. Take a cab or the "motor trolley" to the
Hotel Del Coronado for a look and a drink on the patio, or lunch or
dinner. It is $$$ but very good.

If you are a mystery reader, T. Jefferson Parker just wrote a new
novel called "Cold Pursuit". Set in San Diego and features the
Waterfront Bar. (1/2-$)
The Gas Lamp District is a refurbished downtown slum area of trendy
clubs, watering holes and sleezy chic art and clothing stores. Lots
to see, do, eat, and drink. Its about 8 blocks from the pier. Little
Italy is about 6 blocks, several good resturants ($$), catch the red
car trolley by the Santa Fe Station, 2 blocks from the pier, and ride
to the Old Town Station, its about a 3 block walk from there into San
Diego Old Town with lots of resturants ($-$$), shops, etc with a
Mexican flavor.
Horton Plaza is about 5 blocks up from the pier on Harbor, it is 4 or
5 stories of open plazas, patios, food courts, bookstores, a Weston
Hotel, movie theater, fashion stores and postcard and cell phone
kiosks. Its a great place to stretch your legs if your ship is in SD
for a couple of hours.
As you can tell I like going down to SD :)
Hey, Dick. If you are renting a car please drive up to La Jollan
and eat at George's at the Cove. You and Danni surely won't regret
it. And if you don't rent a car....well, then....take a cab. :>)
