Come Thursday we are 90 days short of our Statendam sail to Hawaii.

On October 10th we fly to San Diego and we have thus far managed to save
about $200 off of the HAL hotel package by staying at the Holiday Inn Harbor
View, and we are looking for places to visit and eat.

We want to go to Coronado so that I can show Danni the hotel that was used
in the making of "Some Like It Hot" Our hotel is right off of the airport
so a cab to Coronado is not an expense.

But where can we go for lunch and where can we go for dinner?

There are some nice restaurants in the gaslamp area which is just a short
cab ride from your hotel. Also just across the street from the hotel is a
very nice popular seafood restaurant. The last time I stayed at the Holiday
Inn there was a Ruth Chris Steak House restaurant at the hotel.

Please check the location of your hotel.
There are multiple Holiday Inns in San Diego.
The Holiday Inn that is near the sea port and the Ruth Chris steak
house is the Holiday Inn on the Bay.

If you will be at Hotel Del Coronado at lunch time why not have lunch
there.
My BIL lives in Coronado and we have dined many times there. Its not TOO
expensive and it will be an experience.
The hotel is full of history and might take time to see it all.

SUNNY<........would also like to suggest while there you view the artist

Dick, sorry but Bob is right. The Holiday Inn that I have stayed at is the
Holiday Inn on the Bay located on Harbor drive directly across from the
cruise terminal.. Still your hotel is only a short ride to the gaslamp area
and Anthonys, the very popular seafood restaurant that I mentioned.

Go to Anthony's Star of the sea and/or Anthony's Fish Grotto (both in
the same building) on the water next to the cruise terminal.

There is a ferry that runs from Seaport Village, near the Convention Center in downtown San Diego, to Coronado.  It is a fun ride and it lets you off at a small group of shops with a great sea food place.  I can't remember the name, but I've been there several times while visiting folks who live on Coronado.  Coronado also has many summer festivals and events in the park near the center of the island.  I would check their web site to see if any concerts are scheduled there.  I've taken a picnic dinner and enjoyed myself while listening to a free concert in the park on Coronado.  Following is the web site for the visitor's bureau and the concert schedule for Spreckels Park.

http://www.coronadovisitors.com/coronado-events.html

Coronado Summer Concerts in the Park
Sundays through mid-September at 6:00 pm in Spreckels Park,
7th Street and Orange Avenue. Free and open to the public.

July 4 — West Coast Iron Works
July 6 — Carol Ames Country/Pop/Rock
July 13 — Jaime Moran Latin Jazz Ensemble
July 20 — Pacific Coast Concert Band
July 27 — Benny Hollman Big Band

Have a great time.

I would rent a car. I have paid as little as $16 a day in San Diego. Check
Orbitz for some of the smaller companies

Anthony's (seafood) is right across the street and is very good.

The Gaslamp district is not far away and has tons of great food. At the top
of Horton Plaza (the downtown mall) is a wonderful Chinese restaurant, the
Panda Inn (not to be confused with little takeout places with similar
names).

Hi everyone,

I will second Clint's recommendation. You can eat in the covered
outdoor area and have a very casual meal or eat inside with glass
walls. Either way you can see the ships at the cruise terminal.

We are looking at two Holiday Inn hotels with identical rates. The Holiday
Inn On The Bay is on North Harbor Drive and is where Ruth's Criss is
located. The Holiday Inn Harbor View is on First Avenue and they will
shuttle us to the pier. We have not contacted the other facility but I
cannot imagine that they wouldn't offer the same service.

Sunny,

I am not sure when we arrive in San Diego. The flight schedule keeps
changing and there are two non-stops. The first gets in at 10:19AM local
and the other at 12:52PM local PT.

If we are on the second flight, by the time we get to Coronado it will
probably be too late to lunch.

Thank you, Spencer.

The last time we rented a car was in Honolulu in 1999. We had to take a cab
downtown to the hotel, and once we had the car we had to try to figure out
where to park it, and then got lost trying to find Roy's restaurant. Then
we had to try to figure out how to return the car in the dark after the sun
went down.

Taxis sound like a good idea this time. <BG>

Couple of thoughts. There are several Italian resturants in the Little Italy
area at the Date and India intersection. For breakfast my wife and I found a
real dive that advertises itself as the oldest bar in SD. It's the Waterfront
on Kettering Blvd(several blocks up from the bay). Full breakfast ofr $3.50.
Some of the locals come in and drink their breakfasts. Within a short walk
from the cruise pier are a number of resturants.

My suggestion is take a harbor boat ride over to Coronado. It leaves
from the pier just south of the Cruise ship terminal. 4 minute walk
from Anthony's Fish Grotto.

>>> Our hotel is right off of the airport so a cab to Coronado is not

Cab will probably cost you $20 one way. Boat trip is more fun. Boat
goes to the old Coronado Ferry Landing, which has a couple of nice
places by the water to eat. Take a cab or the "motor trolley" to the
Hotel Del Coronado for a look and a drink on the patio, or lunch or
dinner. It is $$$ but very good.

If you are a mystery reader, T. Jefferson Parker just wrote a new
novel called "Cold Pursuit". Set in San Diego and features the
Waterfront Bar. (1/2-$)

The Gas Lamp District is a refurbished downtown slum area of trendy
clubs, watering holes and sleezy chic art and clothing stores. Lots
to see, do, eat, and drink. Its about 8 blocks from the pier. Little
Italy is about 6 blocks, several good resturants ($$), catch the red
car trolley by the Santa Fe Station, 2 blocks from the pier, and ride
to the Old Town Station, its about a 3 block walk from there into San
Diego Old Town with lots of resturants ($-$$), shops, etc with a
Mexican flavor.

Horton Plaza is about 5 blocks up from the pier on Harbor, it is 4 or
5 stories of open plazas, patios, food courts, bookstores, a Weston
Hotel, movie theater, fashion stores and postcard and cell phone
kiosks. Its a great place to stretch your legs if your ship is in SD
for a couple of hours.

As you can tell I like going down to SD :)

Hey, Dick. If you are renting a car please drive up to La Jollan
and eat at George's at the Cove. You and Danni surely won't regret
it. And if you don't rent a car....well, then....take a cab. :>)
