I'm happy to report that Captain Jonathan Mercer is now master of the
m.s.. Ryndam. The ship's navigation officers are mostly British, with
some Dutch. The Hotel Manager is Nederlander, Jan Pleijss, who must be
the youngest HM in the fleet. (I would guess he's pushing late thirties
at the most.) He recognized Anne and I from our last two cruises. He
runs an extremely fine hotel department.

We've sailed with Captain Mercer a number of times and he has to rank up
there as one of the best in the HAL fleet. The crews of his ships seem
to be happy crews, and in my experience happy crews make for happy
passengers.

Does anyone remember several years ago when HAL reflagged its fleet to
the Netherlands with one exception -- which was the Veendam. I always
figured the Veendam stayed with a convenience flag so Captain Mercer
could command her. That must have been incorrect, for he is now
commanding the Ryndam.

Yes, woke up one morning to find new flags flying and some serious painting
at the stern going on.

I must agree with you on that. We met Captain Mercer while onboard
the Veendam (my review below, click on my link) and were charmed by
his hospitality and the skill he displayed at running a tight, but
well-run and happy, ship.

I'd love to have the chance to sail with him again. We were just
looking at Ryndam brochures, so we very well may have that chance come
January or February.
