My boyfriend and I are planning to take a caribbean cruise for our honey
moon in June 2003. Our main concern is whether we should take a Royal
Caribbean Cruise or a Carnival Cruise.

Can any of you who have experienced the Cruiselining please help us on
deciding. We have never been to a cruise as yet and do not know what to
expect.

Here is my OPINION . .. .

We have sailed on both Carnival, Royal and Princess. We are in our early
forties and have been cruising on these lines for roughly 8 years.

Carnival has a much more lively nightlife. We found ourselves always looking
for something to do on Royal and Princess. They both seem to have excessive
kareokee (sp). While the crowd on Princess was slightly older I think Carnival
and Royal are close to the same mix. I think the food on Carnival is slightly
better (in recent years) and Royal has gone down a bit. I think the decor on
Carnival is too much of "not a good thing" while Royal is decorated extremely
tastefully with lots of brass, plants and glass. Carnival has way too many
neon and flashing lights and their color schemes are nauseating.
We sailed on Explorer of the Seas last year and even with the size of the ship
we were always looking for somewhere to just dance. They have shows, jazz,
kareokee, singalongs, etc but nowhere to dance. People seem to walk endlessly.
Every night the disco had kareokee contests until 11:30 -
This year we are trying Carnival Pride.

I think you need to figure out what you are looking for and what type of
activities you enjoy before anyone can really give you any advice.

You are going to get many responses to this question. For people that have
traveled on Carnival they will like Carnival for those on RCL they will like
RCL.

It comes down to this Carnival is like Las Vegas, Neon lights, buzy carpets
and ceilings.
Royal Caribbean is more like New Orleans, better decor but same amount of
fun.

I just got back from Radiance of the Seas, and RCL ship. SHe is by far the
most elegent ship in the RCL fleet. They spent millions on Art and wood. I
spoent a whole day looking at the art work. There were two places to dance
the disco and the Colony club. I spent most nights in the Colony club which
is a place uou are allowed to smoke a cigar, it has gaming boards, computer
controlled self leveling pool tables, a stage for the bands and a dance
floor. This room to me made the ship, all wood everywhere. Food was great
but I ate too much.

Your travel agent will probably tell you as you go from Carnival to RCL &
Princess to Celebrity the class level goes up.

Get a good T/A and you will hopefully pick the right trip.

Oh one more thing as class level goes up so does age groups & cost.

You can Imagine what a Silversea ship would be like older wealthy people,
but a nice ship.

Other than the opinion on decor (I happen to like glitz and neon), Kathy said
everything that I would have said. If you are in your 20s, 30s, or 40s, I
would say, go with Carnival, unless of course, you don't like Vegas <G>

You will get as many opinions on this as Carter has pills. My
personal preference is Royal Caribbean. The next guys might be
Carnival. It depends a lot on what you are looking for in a cruise.
Royal Caribbean is typically a little more subdued and Carnival has
more of a party atmosphere. But, you can still party all you want on
RCI or find quiet and more subdued entertainment on Carnival. I say
that you are going to still be confused after getting advice on this
subject, but no matter which one you choose, you can MAKE it a good
time with a good attitude. If all else fails, write your choices down
on a piece of paper, close your eyes and pick.......lol. If you go
with a carefree attitude and don't let the small stuff get to you, you
will come back raving
about it no matter which line you choose. Good luck and happy
sailing! Pam

What about folks in their 50's or, God forbid, even older??

Ermalee,
I too fail to understand this age thing.
All it is is a state of mind. My goodness I know people in their 30s 40s
who lollylag around, moaning and groaning while their parents 70-80
years old are out there enjoying life to its fullest

I agree with both of you. My hubby and I are very late 50's and we both
think we are getting better as we are getting older. You are only as old
or as young as you allow yourself to be. Sometimes I think hubby is a
two year old again.
Here is to getting younger all the time!!

Just thought I'd comment on this age thing. We went on a 16-day cruise
through the canal five years ago. We're in our mid-40s. We ended up doing
things with a crowd of about 10 people ranging in age from late 30s to 70s.
Our table mates were the oldest of this group, 70s. After talking with them
for a couple of nights, I was embarrassed to come to dinner. They were so
interesting and had such amazing life experiences and stories. We were
totally boring in comparison! Luckily, they seemed to put up with us.

Here's to gaining more fun life experiences through cruising!

Ketherine-
I've cruised twice on RCCL and once on Carnival. If you've never cruised
before, either one will do just fine. Rather than pick between the two
cruise lines, first pick a destination, then a departure date, then pick the
newest of the ships that fit within your criteria.

Probably the most important aspect to your enjoyment of the cruise will be
who the cruise director is. Though all 3 of our cruises had good cruise
directors, the last one on the Sovereign of the Seas was the best. The
cruise director is all over the ship at all kinds of functions and is pretty
much the emcee for all of the shows, games, and events. You'll want to be
where these guys are.

I agree. It's a state of mind. It's about personal tastes and lifestyle
desired. I've been moaning and groning since I was 3. My personal tastes
have always been more towards HAL, Celebrity, than a more active line. Some
of my older friends would be much better off on Carnival if they can deal
with the decor, or NCL/RCI and some of my younger friends would enjoy
HAL/Celebrity or even more Cunard.

By golly, you just might like them all! We did. Carnival, RCI, NCL, HAL,
Celebrity, RottyV. Each cruise line, each ship and each crew have their own
character. Their own positives and not so positives. If you like different
types of people, you will probably like different types of cruise lines. You
won't know what you like until you try them. Its my aim to try each of them
some day!

Flip a coin. Try one and then the other!

Hey wait a minute. I have been moaning and groaning since I was 1 and
my tastes are away from Celebrity.

Now this is something I can really agree with. At least try them. I
can't figure why some only cruise with one line, many not even trying a
line other than the one they took their first cruise on. I have a
favorite but I still alternate among the cruise lines.

I would be open to try any cruise line, but for me and what I like to do
being a single 30 something guy I prefer Carnival...it FITS me for the
atmosphere and LIVELY activities offered. Everyone will have a different
opinion here, but depends on what your looking for in a cruise
experience! Also I feel any cruise is what you make it to be!

I like Vegas when I'm in Vegas. I guess I just have an impression that
cruising is supposed to be about elegance and class. (Like the olden days) I
am only 36 but I like elegance over the neon at this point of my life. I
can't tell you enough about how elegant, classy and romantic Radiance was.

Like I said those who travel on one line tend to stay with the product until
they screw up.

Just go back from carnival paradise, and can honestly say that
there are more entertainment choices in the evening than other cruise
lines I have been on (RCCL explorer, Princess, etc. i've been on 5 cruises).
Every lounge had a live musician act playing in them (around 5-6 lounges),
and
they played a LONG time with little breaks, so you could be assured of
catching
their act when you passed by. The genre varied from big band to string
trios.
there were also "adult" comedy shows at midnite that were pretty spicy.
I dont remember seeing so much muscial entertainment options since my last
Carnival cruise in 94. RCCL was great too, but I feel a more fun atmosphere
on Carnival.....And then there is the food, which was the best I have ever
had
on a cruise.

When I was born, I have been told I was a very happy baby which has
stood me in good stead for nigh on 75 Years. For those of you who have
been groaning and moaning since infancy you will in all probability be
moaning and groaning well into your senior years.

SUNNY<.........just knows you will be the ones that the junior
population will then refer to as - those moaning old groaning codgers -
and in that instance they will be correct

Kevin, there are rabid people here who will think you are mentally
deranged, but I'm not one of them. The food we had on the Spirit 3
weeks ago was wonderful, even the lobster was good (and I *never* order
lobster on a ship).

I enjoy the bands in the lounges, I'm glad to hear that the Paradise had
some good ones. I also like the comics. Did the Paradise have a deli
or Chinese food? Did they have ice cream sundaes in the afternoons?

Becca <-----I may go on the Paradise next year...
