I liked the Captain Marvins half day excursion (3 hours). I liked it
because it did two reefs plus the stingrays. The two reefs,Coral
Gardens and Barrier were wonderfull. Also Captain Marvin timed the
sandbar so that we did it when there were few other boats there.
Another positive is that the half day is on a smaller boat, there were
only about 15 or so on the boat. I saw boats there that appeared to
have 100 on their boat. Captain Marvins also does a shorter excursion,
only one reef plus the sandbar on a larger boat with more people. I
recommend the half day over the shorter excursion.

Clay- I would recommend Captain Marvin's. Watersports . Their web site is
www.captainmarvins.com .They are one of the oldest and most reputable of
tour operators in Grand Cayman. I was on the Conquest this past December. I
booked the trip on the Friday before leaving New Orleans (on Sunday). They
confirmed my reservation the next day. They are reasonably priced - $34 for
a trip to Stingray City and another location for snorkeling. And to top it
all off, on my excursion, the boat was piloted by 88 year old Captain
Marvin himself!
Another big advantage of booking your own excursion- the tour operators like
Captain Marvin have smaller boats so they can handle the choppy waves that
may occur on a particular day. When I went, Carnival had cancelled the
Stingray City tours because the water was too choppy that day for their
contractor (I think it is Kelly Watersports). Several who had booked with
Carnival were able to get a tour with Captain Marvin and some of the other
tour operators.
Captain Marvin's is located about two blocks from the pier, so they are easy
to find.
Have a great cruise!

In December, we used Moby Dick Tours (www.MobyDickTours.com) We enjoyed them
so much that the 2 of us cruising again in April from our group have booked
with Mark again. We've talked 12 of our friends into coming along too (I'm
even "allowing" Jarrod to cruise the Grand with me this time lol). This
upcoming December, about 60 of us are cruising together again, and several
of us are planning to book with Mark then too. The intimate experience was
great, and since there were so few of us onboard, we had more stingray time.
In fact, there were more stingrays than people in our area of the sandbar (I
assume most independent companies are like that). For that excursion, I'd
definitely go with a local tour operator. You'll only pay about 50% of the
ships price, and have a much better experience. Smaller groups mean the
opportunity to learn more about the area, and more chance to ask questions.
However you decide to do the tour, it's certainly one of those that falls
into the "must do" category.

Dexter is the one with the Yellow/Black mask, holding the stingray.
We had a group last year with 17 and used Capt Dexter. Just our group on the
boat. He let the kids lay on the webbing between the hulls on the stern. It
was kinda like water skiing. The adults went up on the bow webbing for
suntans. If the wind is right the Capt will cut the motor and pull up the
sails. We booked him 3 month or so before. Called him when we were getting
on the tender and he picked us up at the dock.

Capt Marvin's good also, but I like the sail boat better.
Both have equipment included. but we always bring are own mask/snorkels.
Both can include an island tour to "Hell" and turtle farm, although I don't
know what left after last seasons hurricane.

Sonny, those are AWESOME pictures! I don't suppose you are going to
post a review of your cruise experience? I would love to hear what
you think of Explorer OTS!
~David
Thank you David. I'm not one to write reviews but I liked the Explorer more
than the Navigator or Mariner. It was our 24th cruise with RCCL and I
thought the food and staff were great. We will be on the Jewel in two weeks
and I'll be posting a lot of pictures of the ship. If you have any specific
question you can email me.
