Does anyone remember the nuclear powered passenger/cargo ship Savannah?  I toured this ship with my father when I was 10 or 12 years old at the Port of Houston.  I'm just wondering what happened to her. I've only been able to find one picture of her on the internet.

I believe the Savannah is moored at the Naval Shipyard in Puget Sound, Washington, along with other decommissioned nuclear powered ships from the Navy.

My father toured her in Europe in the early 60s (I think it was
in Germany). He loved to tell the story of how the European
technical people would ooh and aah over the nuclear reactor,
and then laugh their butts off at all of the USA-made marine
equipment, fittings, machinery, etc. that was already some
30 to 40 years out-of-date in Europe. (I think I am being generous
by saying only 30 to 40 years out-of-date).

Tracy,

Here is a great, comprehensive site dedicated to the Savannah.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Tim:

Thanks for the update. I knew it was at one of the naval shipyard
boneyards. For some reason I thought Puget Sound, but the James River
"reserve fleet" is controlled by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard - which is
actually in Portsmouth, Viginia. <g>

Yes, Tracy, I do remember the Savannah. I, also, toured the ship in N.Y.
when I was in grade school almost 40 years ago. It was a wonder for it's
time and I have never seen anything written about, or any pictures of
it, since. Wonder if it's still around in any manner, shape or form.

My recollection was that the Savannah was in Charleston Harbor. Could
someone help us all out?

You are correct, she's in Charleston right next to the aircraft carrier
that's open to the public (I think it's the Yorktown) I went through her a
few years ago, she's pretty impressive from a technical standpoint but she
was in fairly poor shape when I went through her.

According to the websites others have posted, the ship was moved from
Charleston a few years ago and is now part of the mothball fleet in Virginia

Could be, that really is a shame but when I was last there most people did
not even want to tour her anyway.
