I also enjoyed this article. The Interactive TV on QM2 was the best I've
ever seen, on land or at sea. Until QM2 it was the new ships of Royal
Caribbean which had the best system IMO.

Interesting note. On QM2 when one buys a drink, you don't show your cruise
card. You just sign your name and enter your cabin number. Nothing is
actually swiped or looked at. This is the same way it is on QE2, and I
thought it would change on QM2. I always felt this system left open the
opportunity for fraud. It's obvious that QM2 has the technology to swipe a
cruise card at a POS bar terminal, but they choose not to. I spoke with a
bartender and he told me that Cunard felt the system of swiping cruise cards
was too impersonal, so they rely on the honor system.

The reason I didn't like it was I had to write out my full name each time on
the check. Since I was traveling with my brother and we have the same last
name, there could have been confusion had we not written out our full names.
As it turned out we had no wrong charges, but we really had to check.

It was just surprising for such an advanced ship to have to write out your
name and cabin number each time.

QM2 is truly a floating display of state of the art marine technology (as well
as cruise consumer high tech based trinkies). She seems to be doing very well
and was lucky that most of the wrinkles were pre- delivery. Considering that
she had some problems with her EPD's (probably related to the Slewing Bearings
since that seems to a problem area because the OEM seals have had several
service issues that date back to the debut of EPD's in 1991) the QM2 has been
fairly reliable to date. I am confident that the large out of court settlement
between ABB and Carnival in the first year of this century that resulted in
major mods to EPD's have added to the short, but reliable service record on the
QM2 and on ships that are using EPD's with a pushing option. EPD's with the PV
option are delivered with a nozzled wheel that gives it a higher bollard pull
rating. The most recent major rev to EPD's is probably the use of a PMM which
allows the lower unit to be built with a slimmer profile and helped solve rotor
and stator cooling issues, but the fact that the PMM is just that (permanent)
opens up a whole new set of long term ease of service issues. Nothing is
perfect and there are always trade-offs. The IT build was a hard ass
undertaking, but it seems that as long as it holds up, it was worth the effort.
