Hi folks, just curious, with many folks going down to their departure port
the day before or earlier, it appears that many stay in hotels that provide
transportation from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the pier.
Of course it is free.

Here is the question, how many of you tip and what amount do you tip ???

Pete

It really depends on what they do for me. If it's just a ride from the from
the airport to the hotel or to the pier, on a regularly scheduled run the
hotel has (vs on demand service) and they don't do anything other then load
the bags, then it's a few dollars per person. If they go out of their way,
either in loading or unloading the bags (like taking them to the desk
instead of tossing them on the sidewalk), if they are doing it on demand
instead of a scheduled time, then a bit more.

Industry standard is $1/per bag for a bell person, porter, or any
industry person who handles your bags. Naturally if an employee goes out
of his/her way for you I would hope that you would throw something extra
in? I firmly believe in 'fair' tipping to hospitality employees. If they
go the extra step they will be REWARDED by me...if not then they get the
minimum. Guess it's my past profession of being in hotel management for
over 12+ years and knew the salaries some of these employees
made...believe me they NEED gratuities! Like I used to tell my tipped
employee staffs..."remember that the service you provide to guests is
part of your paycheck!"

When I cruised the Sensation the porter took our bags from the pier and took
them all the way over to the parking garage on the 2nd floor and put them in
the trunk of our car.He wouldn't let me touch the bags. lol Needless to say
he was tipped very well. We were off the ship,in the car,and on the road
back up I-95 in less than 15 minutes.

I have found that at most ports it is the luck of the draw. I have gotten
both excellent and terrible service.

The exception is New Orleans. The porters there are uniformed, friendly and
helpful... every time.

Just back from the Inspiration and New Orleans and I have to agree .....
porters are very friendly and helpful but then again most New Orleans
natives we came across were friendly and helpful :-)

Joe
(Liked the days in New Orleans better than the cruise's days at sea)

The porter said to me, "If you take care of me I'll take your bags all the
way to your car." I said let's go. We had to run to keep up with him. He was
very pleased and almost seemed shocked when I gave him his tip. He saved me
from the madhouse of having to sit in line at the curb to meet my wife and
get our bags. Money well spent for sure,

Joe, try a southern caribbean cruise from San Juan, you stop at a
different port every day. You won't get bored on those cruises.

Becca <-----my husband doesn't like sea days, either...

You know I remember going through the terminal in danang and my goodness all
the folks there were in uniform to. But you know I had to lug my own
seabag, can you just imagine that. But the locals were there with the
favorite sayings to make you feel at home, de de mo (spelling sorry its been
awhile), number 10, beacoup etc etc

From what I remember, we had air conditioned trucks that took us where we
were going, you know the big ones with no canvas on the backs and I
always thought it was special how they would put on those various fire works
shows for the newbies, amazing stuff
