The Alaska state ferries are mostly involved in transportation
than in providing an "Alaska Cruise" experiance. They do have
a cafeteria, tiny staterooms and a Forest Service nature guide
on board, but only two of them (the Columbia and Kennicott) have
a bar. They don't take time to get close to any glaciers, and
arrive at the little towns they serve at the strangest times,
like 3:30 AM or 11:40 PM. The Ferry terminal in Juneau is about
15 miles from town, Sitka is about the same - cruiseships dock
right in town, but the state ferry terminals are placed more
often than not at the far end of the road. Not very conveniant
from a tourist perspective.
The plus side is that the ferries are cheap - about $250 from
Bellingham, WA to Juneau, AK - adult fare, stateroom and food
not included. Actually its cheaper to fly to Juneau on Alaska
Airlines, but you can't bring a car on to the airplane - bringing
car up costs about $500 so figure on $750 for one person + plus
car. Most people drive up to Skagway or atleast Prince Rupert BC,
and take the ferry from there.
