I heard yesterday that the sinking of the above vessel off
Penang, could have been as a result of the deliberate actions of
the crew.

Suggestions have been made that after the fire had been
deliberately started, the bilges were opened resulting in the
sinking of the vessel.

What doesn't add up was the fact that following a fire, a ship
does not usually sink. So why one would wonder did this happen to
Sun Vista.

Can anyone shed any light on this matter?

Apparently, it capsized and then sank, stern first. Could it be possible
that the fire caused the ship to become unbalanced? I do agree though,
based on the Discovery channel documentaries, that most ships don't sink
just because of a fire onboard.

The only way she would sink is if she took on a vast tonnage of water!
More than you would think could have come from ships fire pumps! At the
time the ship was abandoned there was no sign of a list! Ineed were the
bilges opened?

I think you will find that many, if not most, ships that catch fire and are
burned out at sea, do indeed sink. Some alongside turn over as well, and
would obviously sink if the water was deep enough. Water from firefighting
can accumulate on upper decks and seriously affect stability, and of course
is cumulative, the more you fight the fire the worse the stability. Italian,
and for that matter French, passenger ships were always known for being a
bit short on the stability side, in other words you just had to be careful.
So no I doubt any stories of sabotage.

I was a passenger on the Golden Princess from San Francisco to Alaska, July
1997.
On the third morning enroute to Victoria there was a fire in the Engine
Room.
The ship was tilted and we were told that this was due to the water used to put
out the fire. We lost all power and electricity abord. We remained in our
stations ready to get into boats if necessary. Since we were along Washinton
coast- many vessels came to our aid, includding the US Coast Guard very
quickly..
We had to wait for engineers to arrive and ascertain the safety of the
ship. This took some time, but fortunaftely, the ship was safe enough and we
were towed to Vicortia.
I therefore believe that if enough water has flooded a particular compartment
of a ship, and the crew are unable to pump it out, the ship can capsize and
eventually sink.
The entire Princess Crew did all to help and ensure our safety. I never
felt that my life was in danger. After this experience, I feel safer, but I do
take the life boat drills very seriously.
I now always note that when traveling to Bermuda or the caribbean, there are
vessels very close by. ex. Norweigian Crown is near Celebrity Zenith going to
Bermuda..

The Achille Lauro, another ex-Italian sank after she burned, as did the
Angelina Lauro and the Antilles, just to name three.

Perhaps you could suggest a nationality that DOES strike folks as
being swindlers. <grin>
(This could be fun).

Let us not forget Ray, "Texan" was once a Nationality but gave it up. I
guess they couldn't stand the thought of Oklahoma being a state and them
not...... ;-)

Hi Donna,

Do not get upset. As most of my friends here on r.t.c know, I am a
Texan from by boots to my hat. Those that have spoke to me on the

It sank due to the accumulation of water used to fight the fire.

On the afternoon of May 20, 1999 the Luxury Cruise Ship the Sun Vista was returning to Singapore after a typical cruise to Phuket, Thailand when a malfunction in the engine room switchboard started a small fire. Due to factors yet explained, the fire could not be contained and spread throughout the ship. A distress call was finally sent about 6:30 PM. Meanwhile, the passengers were instructed to go up on deck and prepare to abandon ship. All 472 passengers and 672 crew managed to leave the ship. The Sun Vista slowly sank deeper and deeper by the stern for seven hours. Finally at 1:22 AM May 21, 1999 she died and sank about 60 nautical miles south of Penang Island and 50 nautical miles west of Port Weld in the Strait of Malacca in 200 feet of water. A passing freighter finally rescued the passengers after spending five to eight hours in the lifeboats. There were no fatalities and only minor injuries.

She now lays on her port side in the middle of a busy shipping lane in around 70m of water subjected to bad visibility and strong currents
