Sent a terse email to my travel agency ( icruise ) have not heard back yet
( could be because I threatened Credit Card fraud).
Here is the deal, I booked a 7 day cruise on princess, got quoted a price,
made a deposit, viewed their online records of my cruise , it matched their
quote ( have several emails from them verifying this), Made final payment on
Dec. 9th , got an email from their customer service saying I was paid in
full etc. , expect tickets soon ..., then on Jan. 10 I get an "automatic"
email from them saying I owe ONE DOLLAR and 10 cents. I go to their online
record of my cruise and now the total is $41.10 more than my final payment
( it looks like 10 dollars got added to the four fares for port charges in
my party) plus one Dollar and 10 cents for I don't know what. I leave a
voice mail for the TA then email their customer service email address. I get
an email apologizing for "a computer error" and all is fine expect my
tickets soon. Got the tickets fine around Jan. 20 ( cruise is 2/10/02). I
got my credit card bill and their was a charge of $40 from princess and $
1.10 from icruise made on Jan. 11. I never knew about this charge and no one
got authorization from me to charge this to my card ( icruise had my card
number because of down payment and final payment that was made on Dec. 9). I
emailed them and have not heard what the $%## they did. The $41.10 does not
bother me but I'm ticked about my card heing charged without my
authorization or knowledge. Has anyone experienced a "port fees" increase
over a month after making final payment. and has anyone experienced their
card being charged without their authorization. I am considering contacting
my credit card company to report this.

. Exactly how does that work. You give your credit card number to TA , and
they charge for insurance ( they showed up as the payee on the credit card
bill for insurance charges) but princess showed up for deposit and final
payments ( and the mystery $40 charge). Does the TA just give the crusie
line your Credit Card # ?

Just dispute the charge; that ought to be the end of it.

Hi Alberto,

The cruise line reserves the right to charge you extra port charges,
taxes and fee. This is usually in the fine print of the brochure and
in your contract that is supplied with your final docs. The cruise
line gets the credit card # from your TA upon deposit, final payment,
and in this case, on final final <g> payment. I believe that Princess
would not have made this charge without discussing the form of payment
with your TA. I can not say for sure, though. BTW, this last $10 per
person tax was what the cruise line charged for the new Homeland
Security Air Tax. It is $2.50 per segment with a $10 cap round trip.
Of course, if you fly less than 4 segments, I guess the cruise line
has found another revenue source. <;+(

Best regards,
Ray

The $1.10 charge is ridiculous and should have been "eaten" by Icruise. As
for the $10 per person charge it is the new security fee and everyone is
charging it. The $40 is a legitimate charge and should not be disputed just
because you did not like the way it was handled. Drop a note to Icruise and
tell them what you think about the $1.10 charge and let them know you won't
be booking with them in the future over $1.10. Can you imagine the meeting
on that one?

I just bought a cruise on Jan 10 from Expedia sailing Feb 22 and was
not charged a $10 'security charge' for any of us. Bought 'cruise
only' on Celebrity via Expedia and also purchased airfare separately
via Expedia. No separate $10 pp 'security charge' on either the
cruise or the air tickets.

Do you get charged the security charge for cruises too or just the air
portion?

Pardon me, I should have been more clear. Airline tickets are being charged
a $10 security fee. You may have bought tickets through Expedia and you were
not charged the fee. Maybe you were charged the fee under the "taxes and
fees" and you did not know it? Expedia will have to pay a $2.50 segment fee
beginning on February 1 for ALL flights flying on that day and in the
future. Perhaps they just haven't caught it yet or they will charge you at
the airport.

Debra,
Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was just on the air portion but
after seeing a post or 2 stating they just booked cruises and weren't
charged I wasn't so sure anymore.
Thanks again
Bill

I thought the air fee was not effective until March..
There is no new federal fee for cruises.

No for anything booked as of February 1st. Also read that most Frequent Flyer programs won't be
waving the security fee anymore so your free award ticket at the most will cost you $10 maybe
more if your frequent flyer program doesn't forgive other taxes.

In my previous post Michael, I clarified myself and said it was only on air
tickets. Here is the link for the news story in the air fee increase
effective February 1, 2002.

If port charges or taxes went up, the cruise line can charge them to
you even after you "pay in full", it's in the contract fine print,
perhaps this is what happened.

They certainly owe you a explanation either way.
