Hello Everyone,

I will be spending a day in Dominica (Roseau) in December on a HAL
cruise. I am interested in suggestions about what to see and cost of a
taxi tour of the island, rather than taking the ship's excursion.

I appreciate your help.

Hi Laura
Dominica has greatly improved over the years with a new docking pier area
and many shops.
Lat year it was so hot I just toured the dock shops and had a few brews.
Prior to that I took the waterfall tour and was completely soaked along with
mud <vbg>

Hi Laura,

As in so many ports, it is easy to hire a taxi to tour the local
attractions. An hour by taxi in Dominica will allow you to see the
Trafalgar Falls area and the driver will be delighted to tell you of
other sights if you want to lengthen the tour.

We got off the ship and hired a cab with no trouble. The main sights to see
are are described in the ship's tour info and we did it cheaper and on our
own time schedule. We had the taxi driver let us off a ways from the ship
and shopped etc. our way back. I think we paid about $20 each rather than
about twice that to the ship. How much it costs depends on the number of
people in the cab... we had 4.

I haven't been to Dominica, but there is a news report today out of Roseau that
states there was a strong earthquake (temblor had a preliminary magnitude of
6.0,) that shook the islands of Dominica and Guadeloupe early this morning,
destroying a half dozen buildings and injuring several people, though there
were no injuries in Dominica. The epicenter was about 28 miles
north-northwest of Dominica, near the Guadeloupe archipelago of Les Saintes.
The facade of a Roman Catholic church collapsed in Portsmouth, north of the
capital, Roseau. No one was in the church at the time. Several people were
injured in mainland Buadeloupe.

The quake was felt as far away as Antigua and Barbuda, but no damage there.

None of this is likely to affect your visit, but may be of interest to some
readers.

On a Sunday? At a Catholic church?

Just got back from there....I know the taxis charged about $30.00 for a
tour to the Falls and Emerald Pool...for about 3-4 hour tours.

I did the River Tubing and thoroughly enjoyed that!!! Great time!!!
