On a recent cruise we were surprised at the announcement to have birth
cert.s ready to be shown when disembarking at miami. they were packed
in our suitcases! I have been on a few cruises, and have never had to
show this identification when leaving. I thought it might be a
formality -- but not! They were to be opened and handed to the
officials--not just a photo id but passport or birth certificates.
Luckily my kids were able to tell where they were born without coaching!
we panicked when one hesitated a little -- we would have missed her
alot.

I just sailed this past April and no one checked anything (including luggage)
when we disembarked... Where did your cruise go???

Royal Caribbean in Miami? I didn't have it happen but have talked to
others that had this happen in the last few months on Royal Caribbean from
Miami. Also, sometimes customs does a more thorough inspection and this
could be the reason.

They always check me (have for years). They want to make sure I'm really
the person I say I am. Not just some guy who took my place at the last port
we visited.

There were a large number of non US citizens on this sailing from
Miami-- It was not customs but US immigration that did the inspection.
