Has anyone been on the Norwegian Dream in the past six months or so and if
you have, how did you find her condition to be?

We were on it's sister ships Wind about 6 years ago. I wouldn't go on it

I remember you saying that, Erm..Now that she is sailing out of Houston, we
are considering her for the end of December as we last cruised in July and
we're getting withdrawal pangs!! ;-) We shall see! Other choices we have
are Grand Princess and Carnival Conquest, and Elation at that time.

It was tired looking even back then. Nowhere near as well cared for as even
the Zenith... The only NCL ship I've been impressed with enough to really
want to go on again was Norwegian Dawn.

I'd put Wind on par with Majesty/MonarchOTS.

I'd pick another port.

Didn't like Wind. Didn't like Grand Princess. And no way Carnival.

I guess I might do Dream if I didn't have to fly. But begrudgingly.

Jean: We sailed around South America on the Norwegian
Dearm several years ago and found it a very comfortable
ship.

but now I see you are also considering the Grand Princess
and if it is in any way similar to the Golden Princess which
I sailed on this year, that would be my choice (depending on
the itinerary of course) This ship was just spectacular in
every way even though it was too big - the food and the
service were beyond compare - Whatever you decide I wish
you good sailing and especially good health.

My wife and I took the Norwegian Dream in July. After dinner on the
departure day, and shortly after the boat had left the dock, we found a
letter in our cabin explaining that engine problems have forced the
elimination of the scheduled stop at Sitka. Each cabin received a
credit of $100 which could not be refunded, used in the casino, or used
for the service charges. Personally, I felt this compensation was
insufficient because the main reason I chose this itinerary was its
stop at Sitka.

If you look at the www site http://www.cruisejunkie.com/events.html,
you will find fairly recent reports of further engine problems for the
Norwegian Dream. If you Google "Norwegian Dream engine problems", you
will find links to articles in the Seattle Times and USA Today about
continuing problems. Apparently on one of the cruises in August, two
of the four engines went down and the boat was 6 hours late into
Seattle, stranding many passengers with earlier flight arrangements. I
would consider these latter two newspapers to be highly reputable.

That is not an option, Tom..We sail out of Houston or Galveston because we
can drive there the same day in less than three hours.

We were on the Dream for 11 days to Alaska in September. The ship was
ok, but, the restaurant department was pathetic. Food selection was
poor at best, but, service was non-existent. Tables weere not cleared
in a timely manner, people walked around like zombies - the tip was
predestined so there was no incentive to be personable or efficient.
I would never go on it again.\\

Rosaly,
The men in my life have chosen the Dream, if we go, because of the
itinerary...more scuba ports! ;-) I'm glad that you liked the Dream..it
seems you and Erm are in agreement about her.
We have taken the Golden and the Star Princess, so we are familiar with them
and loved them both..
Thank you for your kind words and wishes...I'll let you know if we are able
to go!

You need to go on the Norwegian Spirit, Tom...Now that is one ship I would
book twice for sure!
They show that the Norwegian Dream was refurbished in 2005..I like her size
of 50,760 tons...What year did you sail on her?

Isn't she a sister ship to Norwegian Dawn?

Late 90's. I gave up on NCL after that... until Norwegian Dawn.

I've sailed both within the last year ... They are the same size ... I
guess the same hull design ... but the interiors are quite different
... The Spirit was originally designed for a Far Eastern market ... and
was being changed to more to fit Western needs while we were on it ...
I believe the Dawn has 15 % more tonnage and cabins ... indicating a
more enclosed superstructure ...

Both ships were a joy to sail on ... nice people movement ... (except
for the blocking center galley)... plenty of relaxing public areas ...
and handled rough seas quite well ...

Hi Jean,

Barb and I sailed on the Dreamward (before the stretching) in 1994. It was
a repositioning cruise from New York to Bermuda and on to the Caribbean.

We also sailed on the Norwegian Wind (June, 2001, Alaska). We really
enjoyed both of these ships, but then, we never met a cruise we didn't like.

In a comparison to Celebrity and Princess, I found the Wind very lacking.

Much poorer service than Celebrity/Princess.
Food not nearly as good.
Ship kind of tired looking. Not very clean. Cabins pretty warn. Bathrooms
pretty worn. Big blob of grease on the outside of our window that was
always there... so the window must never have been cleaned on the outside.
No nice buffet restaurant IIRC... at least back then. The pool deck was
disjointed because of the new section where she was stretched.

My overall thinking was... If Celebrity and Princess have a much nicer
overall cruise... why bother with NCL? Why go on a tired old ship like Wind
if you can go on a gorgeous ship like Infinity or Constellation for the same
price? Prices aren't really that different between any of the mass market
lines these days. I would only consider Dawn or one of the other new NCL
ships. But that's me.

This was what NCL posted on their website today (Oct 21)

Norwegian Dream (October 22 sailing out of Houston) will now call into
Veracruz, Mexico on Monday with an overnight stay and spend a full day
there on Tuesday. The ship will spend a day at sea and call into
Progreso on Thursday and return to the Port of Houston on Saturday.

Norwegian Sun (October 23 sailing out of Houston) will spend two days
at sea, then call into Belize on Wednesday and Roatan, Honduras on
Thursday as scheduled. Subject to Hurricane Wilma having moved well
away from the Yucatan Peninsula as predicted by Monday or Tuesday,
Norwegian Sun will then call into Cozumel, Mexico on Friday if the
port is open for cruise passengers. The ship will return to the Port
of Houston on Sunday.

Thanks, Rosaly,
But we chose the Dream to visit Belize and Cozumel because of their scuba
diving sites..

Rosaly is a different person. I'm Rosalie. If I wanted to dive
(which I do and have done in both places) I wouldn't go on a cruise
ship. It's too rushed and you have no chance of seeing the more
remote sites.

In any case, just because Wilma is there now and Dream has to be
rescheduled, that doesn't mean that you might not be able to dive at
the alternate ports, or that you can't do the cruise again. Although
next time, if I were you, I wouldn't schedule it between August and
November.

Sorry about that, but I do happen to have a dear friend who spells her name,

At least they are pronounced the same! ;-)

Sorry, that's the way we wanted it this time..we've done it both ways.

It just happens that our son was going to come with us and was looking
forward to both those sites where he had dived before. And that is the only
time he was able to take the time off from his research studies.

Rosalie, this would have been our 32nd cruise, so we are not novices and we
have cruised in the Caribbean many times before during that time span with
no problems..Just happens that 2005 has been unusually bombarded with
hurricanes...

I hope they are wrong but has been predicted that 2005 could be the
usual for the next twenty years. There is a record of hurricane cycles
with periods of ups and downs. It probably be wise to aviod the
hurricane season even more next year. Here it is end of October and a
major hurricane is in the western Caribbean, and Tropical Depression #
25 has formed in the eastern Caribbean!!!
