- As promised, here's the Toy fair '94 review, along with other odd tidbits
that have surfaced this week. The setup is as follows: A company-by-
company review, with lists (within reason).
Galoob
Bandai
JusToys
ToyBiz
A small Hasbro review
Playmates
Kenner

- Galoob will not be expanding their Star Trek Micro Machine collection
much this year. There WILL be a 16-pack, much like the 9-pack that
made the rounds at K-Mart last year. The 15 already available ships
will be included, along with an exclusive to the set Enterprise-A.

- Galoob's new Star Wars Micro Machines are in their new catalog.
-SW set 2: Y-Wing Starfighter, Jawa Sandcrawler, and Blockade Runner.
-ESB set 2: TIE Bomber, Twin-Pod Cloud Car, and Slave 1.
-ROTJ set 2: Speeder Bike (with Leia), Shuttle Tydirium, and A-Wing
Starfighter.
I received incorrect info on the TIE Interceptor last week. It will
be a Shuttle.
Also shown are 3 playsets, which will come with 5 figures and a ship:
Hoth, Endor, and Death Star.
The Death Star is a 5" diameter dome. The trench runs over the top
(like it's lying on its side), and the gun is visible. A clear
telescoping rod extends from the DS and pulls a ship in for "tractor
beam effect. The dome comes up for play inside. The toy comes
with an X-Wing Starfighter toy and the following 5 figures:
Luke (Tatooine), Leia (white gown), Han Solo, Darth Vader, and R2-D2.
The Hoth set is a 5" play environment with a hangar to hold a couple
of ships, blow-apart generators, and a radar laser cannon or two.
This one comes with an AT-AT walker and these 5 figures:
Luke (Bespin), Leia (Hoth), Han (Bespin), regular Stormtrooper, and
C-3PO.
The Endor set comes with an AT-ST walker and lots of Ewok nasties to
damage said toy. 5 figures: Wicket, Stormtrooper, Chewbacca,
Boba Fett, and Yoda. Don't ask me why it comes with Fett and Yoda,
or why the Hoth set has a regular Stormtrooper. Lucasfilm could make
them change these three.

- Bandai's cash cow was there this week in full force. The actress who
plays "Kimberly" on the Power Rangers show attended as well, hawking
the literally TONS of new toys. The Rangers stuff is too spurious to
list ALL of it, but I'll at least take a big chunk. First of all, all
last year's toys are CANCELLED. Everything for 1994 will be new. There
will be 5" Automorphing figures, where a button controls a helmet which
flips over the character's head. All 6 Rangers will be done like this.
New 8" Karate chopping and kicking figures are also on the way. There
will be 5" Aliens (about 25 or so), too. Rita Repulsa is going to be
phased out as the main bad guy, to be replaced by someone called "Lord
Zed" who will be appearing with his own entourage. The previous Zords are
all gone, too. There will be 5 new Zords that will combine to make some
huge behemoth. Names I caught were Shuttlezord, Red Dragonzord,
Thunderzord, and a White Tiger Zord with a White ranger. There will be a
pile of new accessories, including new swords and a Green Ranger flute.

- JustToys unveiled the next 11 carded Star Wars Bend-ems. No word on
the other seven promised. The new ones: Tusken Raider, Admiral Ackbar,
Bib Fortuna, Lando Calrissian (General Pilot), Lando Calrissian (Skiff
Guard Disguise), Han Solo, Emperor, Wicket the Ewok, Luke Skywalker
(X-Wing Pilot), Boba Fett, and Emperor's Royal Guard.

- ToyBiz has pulled out all the stops with their X-Men and Spider-Man
lines. All the figures were there on prototype cards, along with the
new accessories. Some of these will blow your mind. The Lists:
1994 5" X-Force
Sunspot Mojo (!!!!) Rictor Pyro
Shatterstar 2 (red) X-Treme Killspree Quark
Cable 4 (Air Assault) Black Tom Comcast Warpath 2
Cable 5 (Deep Sea) Slayback

1994 5" X-Men
Chromed Silver Samurai Morph Maverick Beast
Random Fitzroy Senyaka Rogue
Robot Wolverine Albert Bonebreaker (!!) Ch'od (!!!) Raza (!!!!)
Kylun Civilian Wolverine

Notes: The Morph comes with 4 heads: Morph, Dark Morph, Cyclops, and Wolverine.
The Gambit with the leather coat is the 10" one.
The Nightcrawler said to be released is the repaint Series 1
Nightcrawler.

1994 10" X-Folks
Shatterstar Cable Kane Bishop
Gambit Mr. Sinister Apocalypse Weapon X
Beast Magneto Spy Wolverine Omega Red

5" Accessories

Supersize Sentinel with figure prison in chest, captue claw, and blow-
apart action.
X-Men Blackbird

There will be 8" figures that project photos out of lights on their chest.

There will be 4 new "Steel Mutants" sets. Stryfe/Cable, Magneto/Prof. X,
Bishop/Gambit, and Cyclops/Mr. Sinister.

There will be the "Pocket Comics" that appeared in Advance Comics...think
"Mighty Max X-Men"...

- The Spider-Man set will be for the new animated show that starts this fall.
Pocket Comics for these, too.
The List:
1994 5" Spiderman
Dr. Octopus Smythe Web-shooting Spider-man
Venom Carnage Web-Tracer Spider-man
Lizard / tear-away coat Hobgoblin Alien Spider Slayer
Kraven Vulture Parachute Web Spider-man
Peter Parker Kingpin

Word on these is they look McFarlanesque.

- Hasbro has no Baroness or Zarana in their new Joes. It seems to be a
company problem, as Hasbro AND Kenner were not prepared for this show.
This is disappointing. I didn't get full lists for Joe, and Howard, I
apologize.

- Hasbro had a few WWF figures, but not many. The next assortment will
not contain Brutus Beefcake, but will instead have a repainted Tatanka.
These will come out on Purple cards. The set after this will be on dark
blue cards, and will contain Bushwhacker Luke, Bushwhacker Butch,
Headshrinker Fatu, Headshrinker Samu, Marty Jannetty, and Giant Gonzales.
Usual Hasbro policy would be to have the fourth set, too. It is surprising
that they did not. There will also be a yellow "King of the Ring"
wrestling ring coming out later this year.

- Playmates made it to the New York Times this week with their announcement
of "Classic Trek Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles", intended to bring
collectors back to the weak line. Leo as Kirk (green uniform), Don as
Spock, Raph as Scotty, and Mike as McCoy are on the way. There will be
more "Universal Monsters" Turtles, as well as the following subsets:
Apollo Astronaut Tribute Turtles
"Warriors of the Forgotten Sewer", a fantasy line (Splinter as wizard,
Leo as Barbarian...)
more Dino-Turtles, including April with her Velociraptor.
Expect at least some of the Turtles (the Astronauts & Trek) to receive
massive media attention.

- New Star Trek: The Next Generation Figures:
A Dixon Hill Box Set with Data, Picard, and Crusher (100,000 units)
Dr. Noonian Soong Dr. Pulaski Lt. Tasha Yar
Ambassador Sarek Ens. Ro Laren Q (Judge's robes)
Lwaxana Troi Boar Alien (I have no idea which one)
Hugh Picard as Romulan Blue Alien Geordi
Data as Romulan Riker as alien Starfleet Troi

It is unknown what the fate of Romulan Troi and Diagnostic Data is.

8" Talking Next Generation Figures:
Worf Troi Picard Data

8" Command Edition Figures
Kirk Picard Sisko

There will be "Star Trek 7" Figures later this year as well.

ST:TNG Accessories:
Type 1 Phaser Phaser Rifle
Engineering Playset that attaches to the bridge
Ferengi Marauder Starship Excelsior Starship
with 137 working lights....a BORG CUBE.

Star Trek: Classic Series:
No Box Sets were shown, but may be done for Christmas.
USS Enterprise Starship Phaser Accessory Communicator

ST: Deep Space 9 Figures & Accessories:
Rom (Quark's Brother) Tosk Hunter of Tosk
Jake Sisko Vash Grand Nagus
Cardassian Starship Runabout Accessory
Deep Space 9 Station, which is massive and incredibly well-detailed.

- Playmates will also be having carded Exo-Squad toys in a massive line
expansion. Expect everything that appears in the show to be done.

- Playmates will be doing "Skeletal Warriors" Fantasy figures. These
supposedly look excellent.

- Kenner did not have the later assortments of Batman: Animated Series
toys, but did have the next two sets. Phantasm does have a removable
mask and Poison Ivy looks great and is no longer a Wonder Woman repaint.

- Kenner didn't have their Superman figures there, either, but they
are doing them.

- There will be Batman: Legends figures this year. The figures will have
rubber capes that look like they're blowing in the wind, and look
super. The set:
Batman (No gimmicks) Cyborg Batman Bat Knight
A really creepy Joker Nightwing Futuristic Batmobile
Catwoman (purple outfit)
Future Batman (the final incarnation of the Azrael costume)
Batman will be getting Action Masters, too. These will be Die-Cast
figures with molded bases to pose the figures with each other in action
scenes. None were shown, to my knowledge.

- Aliens Marines have been cancelled. Even Vasquez, Hudson, and O'Malley.
The line will be exclusively Aliens versus Predators from now on.
There will be a King Alien, as well as a "Hive Playset" with a special
"Movie Edition" Queen.

- Okay...Star Wars. Kenner, as we all know by now, will be doing the
figures, die-casts, and Action Masters. The contract, however, has not
been signed yet. This is not unusual for the toy business, but it has
held up production on the toys. Kenner only had the Action Masters
at Toy Fair, and doesn't forsee the figures' release until Christmas.
The Action Masters set so far:
Carded:
Luke (Bespin Outfit, Green Saber) Darth Vader R2-D2
Chewbacca Stormtrooper C-3PO
4-pack:
Luke, Leia, Vader, and Stormtrooper
8-pack:
Ben Kenobi, Han Solo, Boba Fett, Chewbacca, Luke, Leia, Vader, and
Stormtrooper.
The Action Masters will have a limited edition mail-in this year as well.
It should be noted, though, that Kenner/Hasbro had papers there for
buyers to be sent their 1994 catalog, so more news on the Kenner/Hasbro
stuff should be surfacing in a couple of weeks.

- That about wraps it up for this year's Toy Fair. 'Til next week,
be well, all.
George...

AAARGH! Not again! I just wound up buying a second ST:TNG set just to get
the Enterprise-D. Galoob seems to be deliberately screwing those who bought
these when they first came out, making them re-buy entire sets in order to
get one new ship. Does this happen with the other Micro Machines lines, or
is it just the TREK stuff?

The Blockade Runner and Sandcrawler are good choices (in fact, this is the
first toy representation of the BR, aside from the tiny one included with
the old die-cast Star Destroyer). I still want to see the other capital
ships: Super Star Destroyer, Rebel Star Cruiser, Rebel Transport and Mon
Calamari Cruiser.

Sorry I missed her. I know, I know, she's too young for me, anyway.

I expected this. My understanding is that while there are a lot of these
"five superheroes in Spandex" shows produced by the same Japanese company,
each year features a different set of heroes, villains and robots. We
wouldn't expect Saban to actually put up the money for *new* special
effects sequences featuring the original Zords, would we?

What about plain ol' Marvel Super Heroes? Are they definitely reissuing the
annoyingly rare Invisible Woman?

[X-Men/X-Force list deleted. Yawn.]

How about April as Nurse Chapel, or better yet, April as the Bride of
Frankenstein?

Glad to see the Dixon Hill set. I presume that if it goes over, we'll see
"Robin Hood" Picard, "Gunslinger" Worf and "Sherlock Holmes" Data. (I'd love
to get a boxed set of Data and Geordi in Sherlockian get-up, with a Prof.
Moriarty figure to boot!)

Hmm...could the "Boar Alien" be "Esoqq?" He's an alien with really bad
dental work from the episode (can't recall the name) in which Picard is
kidnapped as part of an experiment testing the Enterprise crew's loyalties.

Still want to see those Classic aliens.

Boy, Playmates wants *all* my money, doesn't it? Not sure my living quarters
have room for my old STAR WARS collection and all this TREK stuff.

What happened to the "Dark Knight Returns" and Old West Batmen?

Too bad. I wanted to see Vasquez.

"King Alien," indeed.

ALIENS are getting lousy distribution here. Last time I checked, the only
store that got the new Aliens was Target, and their shipment disappeared
within days. A couple of stores have Predators. Still haven't seen the
ALIENS VS. PREDATOR 2-Pack--is this out?

Wouldn't the Micro Machines kinda conflict with the die-casts and Action
Masters? MMs aren't metal, I know.

Are the new figures definitely 5"? If so, too bad for us older collectors. I
would've liked to drop the new figures into my old dioramas.

Man, lots of new stuff. Sounds like I'm either going to have to start being
even more picky about which toys I buy, or else I'll go broke.

I live in Western Canada and all the Toys R Us sells is the first nine
Galoob Star Trek Micro Machines. What are the other six that are
available, and does anyone know when they will come to Canada? If they
are available here, where are they sold?

Thanks!

Aliens are getting crappy distribution here too. However, I did pick up the
Aliens vs. Predator 2-pack around 3 weeks ago. Other than the new marines
(which I guess I won't find), I only need the Panther and Queen Face Hugger.
I know the Panther has been spotted. Has anyone seen a Queen Face Hugger?
