This is the monthly posting of rec.toys.lego roll call form. Please respond
VIA POST TO R.T.L. Please do not send your response to me - post it to the
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
net! If you have already responded and are posting an update, please state so
somewhere in your response (e.g. the subject line) so the various data keepers
will know to update their databases.

============================================================================

Okay, folks, here is the latest R.T.L roll call form. Please fill it out even
if you have already done one in the past.

Version 3.2 changes:
Additions-
"LEGO Dark Age" - Many of us have gone through a period(s) without
buying/playing with LEGO. This period is the so-called "LEGO Dark Age".
When was yours?
"First LEGO set after the Dark Age" - self-explanatory.

=============================================================================

R.T.L roll call was started in January, 1995, so we can all know each other
better (kudos to Lou Zucaro, l...@pause.com, for the idea). Over 400
R.T.L'ers have responded to date. David Karr (ka...@cs.cornell.edu) has been
collecting all the entries. You can find all the past response at David's web
site:

# of LEGOfests Attended: 1 downtown when I was around 7
# of LEGO Theme Parks Visited: none

First LEGO Set: I don't remmember, I was 1! And it wasn't those big
block either.

LEGO Dark Age: started aroung 14 until may 1998

First LEGO set after the Dark Age: Got the 5561 for xmas 1997, but the
first one that really got me out was the 8459 and 5571

Favorite Theme(s): Technic and Team

Favorite Set(s): in order; 5571, 8840, 8459, 5542 (long storie), 8880
(the alternate model)

Favorite Piece(s)/Minifigure(s): The green brick seperator!

Set/theme you would like to see: A 3-4 feet, 12 wheels, low-rider w/
pneumatic itch trailler for my 5571, a kenworth T-2000 w/ a realistic
Catepillar C-12 inline 6 engine and maybe a 6 speeds transmission, a
snow plow / sand distributor truck. They should all be at the same scale
as the 5571, ie same tire. I would also LOVE to build a 15mx15m replica
of middle heart based on Tolkien's works. Imagine: first 3 year, you buy
the land, afterward it gets populated by treebeard, tom bombadil,
Sauron, the Elfs king and subject, etc. Then some building like Elrond's
castel. Don't forget the boat and the Eldar. After 10 year and a lot of
$$ latter, you pretty much have middle heart. Then it's time to follow
Bilbo and Frodo in there adventure and build bag end, the Prancing Pony.
One set per chapter from "The Hobbit" and "Lord Of The Ring" trilogy. I
would be more than happy to put 150k over a 30 year period :-)

Current LEGO Project: Trying to build a 1m low-rider trailer w/
pneumatic to transport my 8459.

Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: I got enough wheels to build a 10 wheels
5571 and a 8 wheels trailer to go with it.

Other (Non-LEGO) Interests: Photography, cycling.

I too have done the speed trials. For a design course in '97 the class was
split into pairs, each pair having to build a dragster from card which
could cover a 10m track in the shortest possible time. Obviously with
plenty of Lego available to me, I played with various ideas before
commiting on the real project. The best Lego design was powered by a
single large rubber band and had large motorcycle drive wheels from 8422.
This could cover the 10m in under 5 seconds from a standing start, and go
on to run over 30m on one run.
Unfortunately, only 1 of my wheels returned from that class ;(
so if anyone has one spare, give me a call ;)

First LEGO Set: Can't remember exactly, but I recall it had a red 16x16
baseplate (or baseBRICK, actually--it was brick height). It had some of the
little red cellophane windows, and a couple of Esso / Esso Service 1xN
signs. Also, the red wheels with grey tires that plugged into the white
brick, and a lot of basic bricks. Some kind of 60's/early 70's service
station set maybe, or else just a grab bag miscellany inherited from a
previous owner. Now that I'm thinking about it, this question is gonna nag
me....guess I'll pester the parents for clues.
LEGO Dark Age: 1981ish to late 1998, when I first laid eyes on the
Mindstorms RIS
First LEGO set after the Dark Age: Mindstorms RIS. First non-Mindstorms:
Technic Turbo Command. First Lego System: 641-piece Freestyle Bucket.
Never had many theme sets as a kid, and they were always small, so Freestyle
is definitely what's in my blood.
Favorite Theme(s): Isn't it sad? Just rediscovered Lego and I think my
favorite theme is the discontinued Pirates. :( But soon Star Wars will be
out to fill the void.
Favorite Set(s): Love that Mindstorms. Drool drool drool.
Favorite Piece(s)/Minifigure(s): Tempted to say Mindstorms RCX, but to
avoid being a one-trick pony, I'll go with arches. Any excuse to use an
arch is fine by me. Minifigs: The monkey from Time Cruisers was cool,
despite not being able to remove his head or legs.
Set/theme you would like to see: What I would really *LOVE* is to see
*themed* Freestyle sets. Especially since themes come and go pretty quickly
these days, I think it would be great if, for example, they made a big tub
of freestyle bricks and plates matching the color schemes of the various
themes. So, when they phase out your favorite theme and you're looking at
all those preformed pieces wondering "What do I do now?", you have a big tub
of imaginative opportunity waiting to be taken advantage of.
Current LEGO Project: Assorted proof-of-concept stuff with the Mindstorms,
in preparation for the masterwork taking shape in my head.
Greatest Claim to LEGO Fame: Not famous yet....but I'll get there. :) I'm
going out there a lego maniac, and coming back a star! ;)
Other (Non-LEGO) Interests: Music (acoustic/electric cellist), writing,
swing dancing, film, avoiding the computer when not at work (except to
program the RCX).

This is rather impressive. Some of the measurements I did were the
following (using the bungee cord from the Bungee Blaster as the
propulsion):

.4 seconds for 1 meter
1.37 seconds for 10 feet.

More details can be found at
<http://www.dejanews.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=339179804>

The farthest I ever had a Bungee propelled vehicle travel was about 10m.

Ah, thats the reason, remember mine was powered by a large rubber band,
approx 10cm x 6mm unstretched. No number of bungee cords could compete -
well I had 4 but ousted them in favor of the rubber band.

> .4 seconds for 1 meter

Being built whilst prototyping for an engineering lab, I was able to test
it on the computer monitored track with physical start, and end switches -
useful but archaic, it should have had light sensors to measure 1m and 10m
times.
I did get precise times to 100th of a second, but what with 3 runs
each of my Lego car, my teams card design, my teams model (we did not
build our own designs), and all the other times in the lab I cannot
remember other than all cars I was involved in consistantly ran under 5
seconds.

Our 10m track consisted of a roll of brown parcel paper along a row of
benches in the lab. This helped traction, but failed to eliminate
wheelspin, some vehicles barely leaving the startline.
The 30m run was outside on a quiet road, and unfortunately was probably
slightly wind assisted seing as the return trip was nearer 25m.

A VERY dodgy picture of my car can be found at;

http://www.geocities.com/Paris/4192/lego_03.jpg

And yes, the wheelie bars were absolutely necessary.

You mention the two biggest problems with Bungee racing: Wheel spin
(traction) and the wheelie effect. My wheelie bar was almost as big as
yours.

I almost want to go out and buy one of the new Technic motorcycles for the
large, smooth wheels that they had. Based on your picture, it looks like
you used the knobbies as well.

I also found some bungee racers had a tendancy to run off in some
direction other than that which they were aimed, ok, so 20 degrees to
either side might not be much on the floor, but on metre wide benches ;(

I am hoping for 4 copies of the new bike, consider that there is only one
front wheel, and it is specific to that set. 2 would be acceptable, but
finances will probably only allow the one ;(
In the photos I had to substitute the knobblies as somewhere between the
end of the lab session, and getting home I lost one of my smooth wheels ;(
This means my 8422 now runs the knobblies from the second copy of 8838,
and my 8857 has a slick front tyre to match the rears.

I just built the new bike in the Harley Chopper mode. This is a spiff
kit. I am forever amazed at the detail that Lego puts into these things,
astounding. Being a Lego kit engineer would be the coolest, and prolly
one of the most difficult tasks going!
