!!! NOTE !!!
Since someone has now bid $20 (!) for all 7 sets, you will need to bid
$5.01 or more for one set if you only want one set. That may not make
sense at first, but do the math and you'll see why. If you want 2 sets,
you'll need to bid an average of $3.76 or more for each of those sets.
Here is a table:
If you want Bid at least this to beat Mike M.'s $20 bid
--------------- -----------------------------------------------
1 set $5.01
2 sets $3.76 ea.
3 sets $3.34 ea.
4 sets $3.13 ea.
5 sets $3.01 ea.
6 sets $2.92 ea.
7 sets $2.86 ea.

3. No, I'm not auctioning off my Castle or Pirate sets yet!
4. The McDonald's sets aren't from any Legoland theme and don't contain
mini-figures. They're comparable to Basic sets, about 20 pieces each.
I really wouldn't recommend bidding on these at this point unless you
are a die-hard collector and know exactly what you're looking for. :)

(All 7) $25.00 / Jess K.
Ben F. also bid $25 for all 7 this morning but missed Jess's bid by 4-5 hours.
This is my fault since I'm not able to stay up all night checking my e-mail
and posting updates. :-) I'll check at least twice a day though.

4A Wind Whirler Y Y $3.57 / Jess K.
4B Sea Skimmer Y Y $3.57 / Jess K.
(All 7) $30.00 / Ben F.
Jess K. did not explicitly bid $3.57 on each set; his $25 bid for all sets
translated into this automatically when Ben F. bid $30 for all sets. Note
you would now need to bid $8.59 if you only wanted one set. An interesting
paradox is that if someone bid, say, $9 for one set, then neither Jess K.
nor Ben F. would have bids on the other six, since they both have only placed
bids on the lot. And then in that case, the bid of $9 is an unnecessarily
high bid increment in light of the previous strictly individual bid of $2.50.
Anyway, I recommend if you are bidding on the lot that you also bid on each
set individually. Saying "$5 each, $35 for all" will do.

No problem. I agree. Getting old. And probably over with anyway.
I have the e-mail addresses of the last few bidders. I'll hold the remainder
of the auction (if there is any) in e-mail. If you're thinking of joining in
at this point, remember that the standing bid is $30 for all 7 sets.
I am actually thinking of starting another auction (groan :-) sometime this
weekend involving a few castle, pirate, and town sets. I'll make an
announcement on r.t.l listing the sets, but I'll keep it strictly to
e-mail (except maybe to post the final results for posterity). Don't send
mail yet if you're interested, wait 'til I get the list of sets together.
I apologize if I've offended anyone with this usage of bandwidth. I'd been
watching rec.arts.comics.marketplace too much and hadn't considered an e-mail
alternative.
(How come we don't see more auctions?)

Yeah, this is by no means immediately obvious. Good question, I'm sure you're
not the only one wondering.
Here's a re-cap...
If you go back to the 7 Feb 93, 8:45 pm CST post, you'll see that Mike M. had
just bid $2.50 for each set, or $20.00 for all 7. In other words he was
willing to pay an extra $2.50 if he could get all 7 sets. I have a much
easier time dealing with individual bids, but how could I refuse a $20/7 bid?
Note that a $20/7 bid is _not_ equivalent to a bid of $2.85 per set. If I
were to sell 6 sets to Mr. X and leave one set for Mike M., he'd pay $2.50
for that set. He'd only be paying $2.85 per set if he got _all_ sets.
So now you'd need to bid $5.01 on one set if you only wanted one set, because
then Mike M. would take 6 sets at $2.50 and I would take $5.01 + $15.00 =
$20.01 total. If you only bid $4.99 for one set, all 7 would go to Mike M.
for $20.00.
With me so far?
Now if you go back to the 8 Feb 93, 1:15 pm CST post, you'll see that Jess K.
upped the bid to $25.00 for all 7 sets. Note he did _not_ bid on the sets
individually, meaning (to the best of my knowledge) that he has no interest
in any of the sets unless he can get all 7. Strange, but that was his bid.
Okay, so if the standing bid _per_set_ is $2.50, and the standing bid for
all 7 is $25.00, you're gonna need to bid >$10 on one set if you want exactly
one set. If you bid <$10, Jess K. will take all 7 sets and I take $25.00.
If you bid $10+x, you get one set and Mike M. gets 6 sets and I take $25.00+x.
Simple, no?
BTW, to answer your second point... Yes, I would make more money if someone
bid $5 for each set: $35.00 total.

: (How come we don't see more auctions?)
Because we don't want to get rid of our Lego.
But if I loose my job, and need money, and everything else I own has been
sold, And I am hungry, I would consider auctioning off my Lego.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeh I'm not expecting people to auction off their only true love, I'm just
sorta curious why we haven't seen a flurry of small miscellaneous auctions.
With the stuff I'm getting rid of, I'm still keeping 98% of my collection,
and an auction is just an attempt to raise cash for missing sets. All things
being equal, I'd gladly mix McDonald's sets in with my Space sets, but I can
do more with the McDonald's sets by auctioning them off and converting them
to cash. Same with the 20 miscellaneous Castle, Town, and Pirate sets I'll
be offering in an upcoming auction.
I'm shooting for a more homogeneous collection. Space sets only. Not rich
enough to afford to collect all genres. :-(
I encourage everyone to prune a small percentage of their collection and
auction it off -- everyone's a winner that way.
*shudder*
You mean you keep them *seperated*?!
All my sets have long since lost their original identities as "space",
"town", "pirate", etc. and are now just part of the great Plastic
Collective. Guess that's why my moon bases have red roof pieces (as
cushions in the cryogenic chambers) and why Majistro has a computer
terminal (Wizardnet access, of course...) :-)
- Mike
Sure, what's wrong with that? 13,000 pieces from Space sets in one pile,
1,500 pieces from miscellaneous other sets in another pile. Whenever I got a
Town, Castle, Pirate, or Technic set, I set it aside knowing someday I could
trade or sell it on the Internet and turn it into another Space set. No sense
mixing it in, otherwise I'd just have to sort it out again later. Most of
these were bought along with a Space set in a combo-pack just to get the Space
set, and the pieces of the non-Space sets were rarely separated from the pack.
All a matter of priorities, friend. You wanna buy my non-Space sets?
Nothing is "wrong" with that, per se -- it's just that *all* of my
pieces get massed together, so I've got spaceships with red roof
pieces, shutters (make good solar panels) and ladders. (And town sets
with computers and satellite dishes.) Everything gets blended
together in the end...
I keep my castle & space separated. (That's all I collect) I see little need
for satellite dishes on a castle or stone walls in space. ;)
Then again, that's just me. I also am working on putting all my castle sets
together according to the set directions and leaving them there for a while.
I usually do my creations with space sets.
