3D Lego Modeling programs?

Hi folks,

I was wondering if anyone knows any 3D Lego Modeling programs
out there, commercial/non-commercial, that are sort of similar
to, say, 3DStudio in function and use? A program that would
allow you to place pieces onto some baseboard, sort of akin
to the Lego home page's build-a-duck Java applet at:
http://www.lego.com/play/duck/index.html

but more complex, and, in a word, better?

Also, is there a
FAQ for this newsgroup?
