since we've taken the thread in this direction, i'll add my two pennies
to this side of the debate as well.

for me, the car that fails to live up to its hype is the 56 ford. to be
fair, it IS a great looking car--i gave it 5 stars--but it didn't quite
live up to my expectations. (in this case, perfection wasn't enough)

everybody i know was talking about this car, how great it looked, how
nice it was with its flip-nose, etc. i half expected to hear that Christ
Himself dropped by mattel with the design sketches for the 56 ford. but
when i finally got one home, i was somewhat disappointed.

the paint didn't quite meet expectations, the wheels were bland, and the
base was plastic. true, the paint is clear and the tampos are
appropriate, the wheels add realism to the piece--still suck though; get
new basics, mattel!--and the plastic base may have been necessary but it
still wasn't all i'd hard it would be. (on a side note, they hinge the
metal bodies of the funny cars to their metal bases, so why not
something as simple as a hood? i know it's a whole different game with
the 56 ford, but it IS the same ballpark)

so, the 56 ford is the one car that fell short for me this year. as i've
said in the past, i don't think it possibly COULD have lived up to my
expectations. still a great looking car, but no where near what it was
hyped up to be.

i submt myself for the tar and feathering now since most of RTC seems to
love this one.

so far we hold the following truths to be self-evident:
FE of the year: #4 chevelle
TH of the year: #5 ferrari
car of the year: JL Classic Gold series 2 VW bus

ALWAYS LOOKING TO BUY:

wrong dead wrong.. so get over it. the cord was the most over rated 99
fe imo. the 56 ford was even better than what i had heard. what you
see as hype is actually the voices of collectors singing cheers for an
awesome casting. br

That's enough! Go to the corner and think about
what you've done! You can come out when you can
agree to get along with the rest of the children!
LOL

Cord as the overrated FE of 99? Now, I understand
this is opinion, and I shall not call you out like
you did the "treasurehuntar"...LOL...but I gotta
tell ya...you're wrong! LOL

I still stick w/ the baby boomer!

i don't know . . . never heard a single word about the cord until i
reviewed it in my first "LET'S DISCUSS" posting.

maybe i live a sheltered life, or maybe the off-line circle of
collectors i speak with isn't as sophisticated, but the opinions i've
gotten on the cord are mostly neutral. hardly anything i'd consider
hype.

on the other hand, i hear about the 56 ford everytime i talk to my
collector friends or even people i meet at the pegs. i never denied it
was a cool car, just way overhyped.

that's what i love about this NG though; so many varied opinions to
hear. let's keep this one going.

Once the Overrated and Underrated discussions are over, maybe you can add
them to your tag line along with the Chevelle and Ferrari.

I guess I would like to add a little more to this thread.....

My opinion (and it is just that) is that for a car to overrated, I would
have to have had expectations of it to begin with. I was never impressed
with the Radio Flyer and Express Lane and consequently never gave the Baby
Boomer much thought. However, as soon as I saw the 56 Ford on the web, I
had to have it. My disappoitment with the Ford is the plastic base, the
fact that even when the hood is down it is not really "down", the wheels
suck and they are loose.

Does this mean that the 56 Ford is my OverRated of the year? Oh No....but
instead I will call it the Disappoitment FE of the Year and begin a new
thread.

As far as my Overrated FE of the Year, here is an off the wall opinion, but
I would rank the Teed Off and the Aurora in a tie. Don't get me wrong, I
like both castings. My reasoning for their selection here, however, is that
I think that Mattel wasted to much time (and my money) with three variations
of both, quite possibly tripling the sales of what is otherwise a normal
car, and thus overrating their importance.

My total list:

1999 FE of the Year: 70 Chevelle
1999 Underrated FE of the Year: Screamin' Hauler
1999 Overrated FE of the Year: (tie) Teed OFf and Aurora
1999 Disappointment FE of the Year: 56 Ford Truck

Thanks for listening, happy hunting and Rock on.

I think you will find that most of the response to this casting has been
favorable, the other thing that is interesting to see is which one of these
castings the following year become cash cows for Mattel. The Ford trucks looks
like its on its way along with the phaeton.

My list

1999 FE of the Year: GT40
1999 Underrated FE of the Year: Corsair
1999 Overrated FE of the Year: baby boomer
1999 Disappointment FE of the Year: porsche GT1 LM98

The phaeton is the next jiffy lube promo and I recall seeing on Mark Franzinc
page recently a KB toys exclusive of some kind. I have the Hot rod phaeton and
it looks crappy with the gold lace wheels, they're so thin compared to the
ones on the FE. I guess it would have made a good TH with some RRs, but ...
we get the double vision.
