Well my wife and I went to the local Wal Mart to see if they had
anything interesting in and get some Drano to clear our sink with, when
we found they had both the new 9" and 12" figures. The 9" figures were
okay, but they did not impress me. I started to look at the 12 inchers
and I was pretty impressed by Worf. Very nice likeness and his outfit
seemed to be well done. Then I checked out Data and Riker. Again, a
nice likeness, but it seemed to resemble them from the beginning of the
show, ie they looked very young, the faces were much rounder and did not
have age lines. Then I picked up Picard. "WOW!!!" my wife and I
screamed in unison. The likeness was uncanny. Probably the best
likeness we have seen on a figure in a long time. The uniform is pretty
cool, and he comes with this huge cannon that goes over his shoulder.
The packaging is extremmly impressive, very eye catching. The figure
costs $24.95 at Walmart, which was a bit of a shock, but I think it was
worth it for this figure anyway.
I will have pictures on my site in a few hours.

A couple of questions:

How's the articulation (better than 9" Trek, comparable to Joes)?

Are the shoes removable or molded into the legs? (I hate that about the
9 inchers)

I'm really looking forward to seeing these.

Thanks,

-Matt

Hehe, my wife won't let me open it to find out :{ She figures for $25.00 it
stays in the box (like most of my more expensive 12 inch figures). From
looking at him through the packaging, I would say he is articulated at the
obvious places, ie: neck, shoulders, elbows, waste, knees, wrists and
possibly his ankles.

I "think" they are glued or molded on. I can see a definite line that the
actual plastic boot makes under the pants. They may be removable however,
but the boots look like they are hard plastic.

Ihave to agree w/ the positive reviews on these. I have about every Trek
figure ever , but like everyone else, have been hating Playmates for the past
few years for their "more than lackluster" product. These threw me for a loop.
Easily the best looking Trek product in the last three years. Great
packaging, realistic proportions, detailed costumes. If they only would do
classic Trek in their basic uniforms. I hear its coming.

Thanks for the update!! I cannot wait to add this Picard to my bald
headed collection. My wall of Picard grows by leaps and bounds. I
need to get a list and figure out which ones I still need.

But...but...can't you counter that argument by saying that the more
expensive it is, the more imperative it is that you increase the play
value by opening it up?

Picked up Worf today. Fan-friggin' tastic. My brother got a Picard.
Anyway, the joints are as follows: Neck (swivel only), shoulders
(ball), elbows, wrists, hips (ball), knees. Not perfect by a long
shot, but could have been worse. For 25 bucks, though, I would have
preferred upper arm swivels.

Molded plastic shoe/boots. Pants have a Famous Cover style stirrup
that slips over the heel to keep the pants tight. Again, for twenty
five bucks, are removable shoes too much to ask for?

I'm not thrilled with the price point, but I couldn't resist after
seeing the head sculpt and uniform detail. And I was Xmas shopping
anyway, so I figured I'd get a little present for myself. :)

SERENITY NOW! Damn it! That's bad news IMO. I guess there's always
a body swap (for added articulation too). I haven't seen these in person
yet, but judging from the pictures Worf and Picard are must-haves
(though I may have to try and trade, so I don't have to drop another
fifty bucks).

BTW, how (and what) are the accessories?

Saw these this morning at Wal-Mart. While I've been less than thrilled with
the prospect of collecting a whole new scale of TREK figures, I had to say,
"Yow!" Picard is one of the best sculpts I've *ever* seen--absolutely friggin'
dead-on likeness. And Worf is damned good as well. Costumes are well-made--no
stinkin' stickers for the pips and comm badges. Twenty-five dollars is a bit
steep, but no worse than Target's price for 12" STAR WARS dolls.

Raving Toy Maniac reports that an "Insurrection" LaForge has been added to the
February 12" assortment. Wonder if that means that there's hope Playmates
will produce Crusher and Troi to complete the "Insurrection" cast?

A 12" Beverly? Lets hope so! Actually, it would make alot of sense.
If
Playmates wants to establish their 12" line, the best way to do it would
to have one whole crew made. Since they now half way there with the
Next
Gen. cast, it would only make sense to finish them off. Of course,
that's
the problem. Having a 12" Crusher and Troi makes sense.

Playmates internet rep, Mara Hart, has said that there will be a
Beverly Crusher from "Insurrection" figure. Mara didn't specify scale,
but I'd wager that both Beverly and Deanna will show up in subsequent
12-inch assortments.

Let's hope...ideally, I'd like to see one of the two ladies costumed with the
current duty uniform, and one with the dress uniform from "Insurrection." That
way, I can mix and match.

As annoyed as I was not to get a Beverly in the 9" "Insurrection" asssortment,
I'd happily trade it for a 12" version done with the same high quality as that
Picard doll.

Accessories are good. Worf comes with a phaser and a nice, if
necessarily blunt as hell, bat'leth.

Picard comes with a PADD and a doofy shoulder cannon that I can only
assume was in the movie.

Oh, and have I mentioned how wretched the head sculpts on the 9"ers
are? Especially Troi. Ick city.

Can't disagree with that. Just saw the first four at TRU during lunchtime.
Since I never bought the original 9" Troi, I mulled over picking her up.
However, I too was disappointed in the sculpt, particularly the molded hair.
It's not Exclusive Premiere-terrible, just not up to Playmates' usual level.
(For example, my wife--not a TREK fan--correctly identified Bele as Frank
Gorshin without knowing that Gorshin was ever on STAR TREK. Troi is no Frank
Gorshin.)

Also, was it just me, or are these made out of a different grade of plastic?

There was a shoulder cannon in the movie, but Worf was the one who fired
it (and from the pictures I've seen, it doesn't look as good as the
prop in the movie (not much detail)).

Agreed.

One more question - does Worf have real hair or is it sculpted (I wonder if
they intend to use real hair for the women)?

Sculpted, with plastic ponytail. I like it. I don't think "real" hair
would have worked with these figs. Imagine Riker with a flocked beard.

I, too, found the 12" figures to be 10+! Very nice! Worth every cent of that
$25! I also found and bought a "Arsenal of Doom" Spawn and a Negative Spidey
(which might get sold).

Whats the chances of Playmates doing a 12" scale Captain Kirk and other classic
Trek characters as well sculpted as these Insurrection figures? Here's to
hoping so!

BTW, if Playmates can make such alarmingly accurate likeness's of Picard and
company why the heck cant Kenner do a decent Han Solo? They suck! :)

There already is a 12 inch Kirk, and he's pretty god damned cool. I
wish they'd do one of the "Wrath Of Khan" era costumes.

The Masterpiece Kirk is NOT 12 inches. The doll measures around 13.5 inches.
Believe me, I have one and it is about the same size and AC Vader and Anakin.
So, no, there isn't one.

Yeah, but it is in scale to the Insurrection figures, right? I mean isn't the
Insurrection Picard the same body and head as the Masterpiece Picard?

Unfortunately no, they are different scales. The Picard heads look exactly the
same but different sizes. A great sculpt by the way. The Insurrection figures
are a 1/6 scale (says 12 inches on the box), but the Masterpiece aren't (says
"each figure stands over 12 inches tall"). Atleast the new Star Trek can chill
with my Star Wars dolls.

Well, as far as Playmates is concerned, there is a 12-inch scale TOS
Kirk. It's seems pretty unlikely that they'll reissue the same version
of the character just to get the scale right. Other versions of Kirk
though? That's pretty likely.

Well, I guess Star Trek collectors will have to settle for a really tall Kirk
because the other dolls are 12". I wouldn't consider the new figs the same
line as the Masterpiece Edition. That is just my opinion. Just think how
people complained when Vader was 12".
