I am new to the Richmond area, and have skied all my life. Unfortunately
I have not found any good spots for skiing. I have heard that the James
River has a few good areas, but don't know exactly where they are. I
have also heard of Lake Anna just 45 minutes away.

i am a skiing enthusiast in charlottesville, lake anna being an
hour away and the james river a half hour. the former is one
of the few lakes around virginia that permit horsepower
conducive to skiing; the latter is widely held to be polluted
and thereby dangerous. a man madde leak~~ lake that is in
southwest virginia, smith mountain lake, sits on the
virginia/n. carolina border and is pretty good--big and with
many finger-like projections. fairly crowded but it is usually
easy to find something skiiable, though you waont find too many
straightaways. i'm always fired up to sky so if you want to
head out there contact me at cg...@virginia.edu.

I have been to Lake Anna but have not been skiing there. I preferred to
go down to Smith Mountain Lake near the border with NC. It is located
near Roanoke and Lynchburg. It is a very large lake which also has a
couple of places to rent boats (important to me as I don't own a boat).
I used to drive down from DC for a weekend of skiing and I'd recommend it.

If you live in the Richmond - Petersburg area, Kerr Lake on the NC/Virginia border might be an alternative. It is easy
to access via Interstate 85. It is a large lake and not crowded, and there are plenty of campsites if you like to camp.

Thanks, I'll probably try the James River (water's been kinda high
lately) since I am looking for a place to ski 1-3 times a week for a
couple of hours. I had heard of Lake Anna, and that's about 45
minutes so I'll probably give it a chance. NC boarder is 2 hours,
but sounds like a great choice for the weekends.. know of any cozy
resorts nearby (or b&bs)?
