I am looking to buy my first inboard (currently an I/O owner) and I have been
looking at Mastercrafts and Nautiques from around 1994. I have come across a
good deal on a 1993 American Skier. Does anyone have any info on this boat? I
wanted to see Waterski magazine had a review of it, but they are not online!
What's wrong with them? Any info would be appreciated! Thanks, Traci Johnston

Although I don't know anybody with one nor have i skied behind an American
Skier. I have seen several used ones this spring. Most looked great even with
high hours which indicates to me that they must be pretty well built. I'm
pretty sure they were "all fiberglass" construction.

They are WELL built boats. They currently have aluminum engine frame, all
fiberglass construction, a few slightly exotic materials in them. They are
also not cheap. They are fairly low production right now, but in an earlier
time there were once tournament approved. They also have been responsible for a
lot of innovation in this industry that many of the big three have copied.

Which model are you looking at ? I'm not sure if the TBX came out in 1993,
but if it is, you need to drive it first. It was pretty heavy in its first few
years and didn't turn very well. A few years later they lightened it up and
made some other modifications that really improved it.

Good boats, but one of the hardest rooster tails of the genre.

I own a 92 American Skier (Legend) that I bought in 94. Excellent boat, no
problems. You will probably find them only with carburetor; not much fuel
injection around back then. Was tournament approved in 92, not sure about
93. The company went bankrupt around 94 or 95, then was revived in 97 or so
by Ron Tanis, former head of engineering. They do very low volume and sell
direct or through a few dealerships. He has parts available for the older
models. Slalom and trick wakes should be very competitive with MC and SN
(pre-TSC). About the same as a 96 Malibu response (neighbor's boat) that I
also ski behind.

Hope this helps,

Don

I own a '91 American Skier Advance Sport and love it. I have almost 1000 hrs
on it and have had no problems and it still looks like new. I don't know why
it hasn't been reviewed by Water Ski magazine, I bet it would get high
marks. I would buy one again in a heartbeat.

It costs the manufacturer about 10K to have a boat tested by Water Skier
Magazine unless the rates have increased in the last 5 years.

The boat I am looking at is a 1993 American Skier Volante open bow. It says
tournament approved towboat on the side. It sounds like a good boat from what
I have heard so far, does anyone have any experience with this model?

Saw one at the San Antonio boat show. They were expensive. If it helps,

With respect to the American Skier Volante, here is a summary from the 1993
Water Ski boat Buyers' Guide: "Slalom- Wakes aew hardest at long line lengths,
where they're big and tall but soft an crossable. From 15 off on down, there
is tournament-boat feel. You will encounter a rooster tail at 22 off. In
deeper short-line, you will notice just enough hardness and dip to keep this
boat from challenging the speciality boats, but not enough to hold you back.
This boat is capable of serious slalom training. (prop ratings went from 2.5
at long line, to 3.5 at 28,32, and 35 off.

Specifications were as follows:

top speed 42.2mph
distance to 36 mph 243 ft.
0 to 36 mph 8.08 sec.

Hope this info helps.

I have a 1992 American Skier Legend and have loved it. About 800 hours on it.
There was a pull to one side and we had the rudder trimmed to be neutral at 36
MPH. The wakes softened out very nicely.

Fun to drive and fun to ski behind. Excellent for wakeboarding too.

Huh? Why do people mess their boats up like this?
Leave the torque on the rudder. It will track a lot better.
