I am the proud owner of a (nearly) new 1996 Ski Nautique.I traded out of a
1992 MasterCraft Prostar 205 (which was a fine boat in its own right). As
you would expect, have notived a few differences between the two boats.

One of these differences is the harshness of the "off" side (for the
Nautique, left-hand) turn. The Mastercraft turned nearly as well to its
"off" side--the right side--as it did the "on" side.) I understand that
this difference is due primarily to the fact that, unlike the rudder on the
Nautique, the rudder on the MasterCraft is offset slightly from the line of
the prop shaft. However, I also understand that the 97 Nautique turns as
well to the left as it does to the right, even though its rudder isn't
offset either.

I've heard that the new progressive-pitch 4-bladed prop is responsible for
the 97 Nautique's smooth left-hand turn. Is that true? If so, can I
imporove the left-hand turning characteristics of my 96 by switching to
this new prop?

Absolutely. However, make sure you get the larger diameter prop. The
smaller one performs worse than the standard 3 blade (I don't remember
the sizes, just don't get the smaller one).

If you replace your prop with a new OJ 4 blade do not change the size (
diameter of the prop) unless you have the gear reduction transmission.
call OJ( Johnson propeller) for their advice. They are located in
Newcastle, California

Thanks. All the Nautiques have the 1.23:1 PCM PowerPlus gear-reduction
transmission. But has anyone actually tried a 4-blader on a 91-96 Nautique?

Steve:

We have been doing extensive testing on 4-blade props (on MasterCraft and Tige' boats).
If you would like to call us regarding the results, please feel free! 800.592.7547

Not really some of them are 1:1

Ok,

So I have a 93' Nautique without the 1:23 reduction. Anyone tried the
four blade on this setup? I understand the 4-blade prop is quiet and
holds speed well. I would like to know if the testing has been done
on a 1:1 with the 240hp?

As a dealer, we have put the new four blade props on boats back to 1994
models with great success. The diameter of the new prop is 13" as opposed
to the 14" 3 blade. This does not seem to affect the performance. Just
the opposite is true. The hole-shot is tremendous as is the holding power
for not only slalom and jump but also for tricks. One difference is the
1997 rudder is shaved on both sides of the LEADING edge. Once you put a 4
blade on your boat you will notice a quieter left hand turn but it will be
harder to come out of that turn. I have shaved the rudder on my 1996 and
it made a remarkable difference. In the final analysis, I believe it will
improve the performance of your boat regardless of transmission. We have
put these props on Mastercrafts and Malibus as well with similar results.
I always suggest to customers that they have a spare prop. This is a good
excuse to get one!!

Can you give me more info on shaving the leading edge (which, I assume,
means the edge closest to the prop)? Do you shave both side equally, or one
side more than the other? Do you knock off only a little bit, or do you
shave it down to a knife edge?

I would think that Correct Craft would've tested them initially on a '96
before considering them on a '97, and if it wasn't promising on the '96,
then we wouldn't be seeing them on the '97. I have no personal experience
with the 4 blade on a '96, but wouldn't think it would hurt anything.

Our local dealer sold his last few 1996's with the 4 blade props and
said they were all quieter and the off side noise all but vanished.

As it relates to the shaving of the prop, I would suggest visiting a
dealer and looking at a 1997 rudder. It looks as if both sides are shaved
equally and to a fine point. Look at the trailing edge of your existing
prop and imagine the same on both sides of the leading edge.) I would
suggest starting with a little and progressing until you reach a
satisfactory setting. As it has been with shaving of the trailing edge,
each boat seems to require fine tuning. Good luck. E-mail with the
results.

Steve,
I have a 96 SNOB and put a 4 blade on about 2 months ago. It does give
more hole shot and it holds speed much better than the 3 blade. But
don't believe it when people say it eliminates the left hand turn noise.
It is quieter than the 3 blade but the noise is not gone. If your in
the market for a new prop get the 4 blade. If you have a perfectly good
3 blade and a spare, I don't think you will be happy that you spent the
money for a 4 blade. I haven't tried shaving the leading edge of my
rudder. I will take that matter up with my mechanic this weekend.
