I would have to disagree somewhat, unless you mean only the immediate
Bay area, i.e. 30 miles around SF.

I recently moved to the Palo Alto from Houston, and have found a number
of good skiing locations within 2 hours of the Bay Area, the most
obvious of which is the Delta which is only an hour from the Peninsula.
You couldn't ask for much better waterskiing on a public waterway.
There are all sorts of resevoirs east of the Delta which are great for
skiing (2 to 2.5 hours). Obviously, the winter and spring skiing is
gonna beat the summer when all the I/O's and PWC's get out, but I
understand you can always find some smooth water on the Delta if you're
smart about it.

As far as ski schools go, there's Mike Suyderhoud up at Lake Shasta (4
hours from SF), Wiliy Ellemeir (spelling?) at Lake Berryessa (1.5 hours
from SF) or Discovery Bay Ski School (John Albright) on the Delta (1
hour from SF).

Good luck.

Koops is a ONE EYED SKI NUT - Grunter (Grant Arnott) is only capable of
teaching people to BAREFOOT NAKED (as witnessed personally at the recent
Australian University Waterski Championships by yours truly !) He also
pushes people off the boom bar while they are learning to foot !
Other than bieng a total showbag - he is not a bad coach !
All the Best,

HELMUT
