I don't have the Champion catalog that cover Outboard Engines, but I do
have all available and genuine NGK catalogs.
For a 175 HP Mercury Outboard, the NGK plug is listed as BU8H for all
models from 1979 through 1998.
However, if I check the Cross Reference Charts to try to find a Champion
equivalent for the NGK BU8H, I cannot find any equivalent plug, neither
in the "NGK to Champion" section or in the "Champion to NGK" section.
Concerning the difference between QL6VC and L6VC, and according to a
chart that explain all Champion type number codes, these plugs are
basically identical except the "Q" indicate that this is a resistor plug
with inductive resistance primarily intended for use with CDI ignition
systems.

ADDENDUM:
In the mail today I got the latest catalogs (2000 editions) from NGK.
In the latest NGK catalog that cover outboard motors, a 175 HP Mercury
(1979 and later) is now listed to use either BU8H or BUZ8H.
BU8H is a standard plug, while BUZ8H is a resistor plug with inductive
resistance specially designed for use with CDI ignition systems. The
"Z" in NGK type numbers is similar to the "Q" in Champion type numbers.
In the Cross Reference Charts, BU8H is still not listed with a Champion
equivalent, while BUZ8H is listed with QL16V as Champion equivalent.
Don't even look for the equivalent. The Merc will run much better with the
NGK's and the plugs will last longer. The last two engines I bought, a Merc
and a Mariner, both came from the factory with NGK plugs.
