Hi,
We have a Sea Ray 20 ft bowrider I/O (not a ski or tournament boat). The
stern mounted ski tow eye and relatively small wake make it difficult to
attempt any advanced wakeboard tricks. We looked into getting a pylon (a
Fly High, I think) but were talked out of installing it by our SeaRay
dealer. My wife also didn't like the idea of taking it apart to cover
the boat each night. Has anyone had success modifying this type of
recreational boat, either using water weights(Phat buddies or whatever)
to increase the wake or some sort of easily removed pylon? Or do I have
to start looking into getting a new boat?
Thanks
John G.

I see lots of IO's with extended pylons. You could modify your cover...or
just have a new cover made. That boat should have a decent (big) wake at
wakeboarding speeds...14-18 or so.

Check out www.joystickpylons.com . We got the roll bar from them and are
very impressed. It's very easy to take down - just pull 2 bolts. Looks great
on my 97 FourWinns. You should be getting a good size wake if you're going
15-18 mph.

I mounted an extended pylon in my 17' SeaRay without any problems. Check out
the pics here: http://www.oz.net/~billk/waylon/
That company went out of business a couple years ago.

We just mounted an Air Boom Universal pylon on my buddies' 18' Bayliner.
Their nice, powdercoated any of ten different colors & top notch quality.
Air Boom can be seen here: http://airboom.com

As for taking them apart. Well, it takes all of about 30 seconds so it's not
any trouble at all. And all the parts fit in the gunnels so their not in the
way when we're not riding.

Both boats put out OK wakes, plenty big enough for us to pull off 360s,
tantrums & backrolls without much trouble. Add a fat sack & it would be
better.

Good luck!

I installed an Air Boom this spring in my I/O, 19ft Century. I agree
with bill, it takes all of 30 secs, how long does it take you to pull
three pins? and it's down. I love it and I catch monster air behind
my boat. you can see a pic at www.execpc.com/~laser/boat.html

John,
dont know why people are down on I/Os for boarding boats, if you look at the
hull design they work very well with the deep V displacing a lot of water,
which is what makes the wake. I board on a 19foot Chaparral and love the
wake it throws with no extra weight. I am looking into the roll-bar from
joystick, i have a pylon now but like the idea of keeping my back
seating.... they say it breaks down fast but i am going to have someone
alter my cove to fit the new toy. But as far as the wake... look at some of
the boarding mags and see the boarders going off big behind a PWC with no
real wake..... it is all in the cut.... have fun
