I am entirely new to the water-skiing and wakeboarding. I checked the FAQ at
http://www.utoronto.ca/ski/water/faq/index.html, but I could not find an
answer.
I will soon have access to a speedboat, but it will be in the north coast of
the Dominican Republic, near Playa Dorada. There are no lakes in the area
(to my knowledge). Any water-skiing will have to be done at the beach or in
the open Caribbean sea. The beach near Playa Dorada is quiet. The waves are
so mild I don’t think you can even surf in them. There is plenty of space,
though.
How is water-skiing at the beach different from a doing it at a still lake?
Would you recommend learning the sport in beach water? Does anybody know the
waters near Playa Dorada, Dominican Rep? If so, could you please share your
experiences while water-skiing there? Are there other waterways near by that
you’d recommend?
Thanks.

Yes. Been there, done that. Of course salt water is much different
than fresh water.

What do you mean? Is the skiing slower, bumpy...? Which do you prefer?
Thanks again.
The basic issue is that you ski on the surface of the water. So if the waters
surface is good. Then you should have good skiing. Also unlike many small local
lakes. If there are too many people you can just go to a place where there are
not so many. I would just want to have a good sized boat and plenty of safety
gear.
Just my thoughts.
Sedan.
But it is a lot of fun, and actually even with a bit of wind, it is easier
and more fun on the ocean then on a lake. There is usually a good distance
between the waves and if you run parallel to the waves, it works fine. Plus
there is no other boat wakes. I already liked skiing on the North Sea... so
the Caribbean will be alot nicer.

Your speeds will be 24 mph to 28 mph, you'll get bumped around a bit,
but you'll have fun. Make sure to ski very early in the morning, when
the wind and waves are at their smallest.
And buy a tube, too. That is an absolute blast in the open ocean. You
won't stop laughing until dinner.

Just make sure to rinse your equipment down with water when you are
done to prevent any premature corrosion.
Wasn't there a sequel to a famous movie about skiing in the ocean? I
think I would go faster than 24mph!!

Thanks so much to all those who replied. This was very helpful! If there is
someone maintaining the FAQ, perhaps this question should be added.
Thanks again!
