I am looking for a good ski boat with room for family. I like the Sunsetter
for both these reasons. The dealer was very high on the LXI but was not very
giving on the asking price. My question is - for a non-competitive skier,
what is the real difference between the LX and LXI? Will the hull change
make a big difference? Will this be the last year for the LX and thus resale
will not be good? What can be expected as a price difference between the two
models?

Mainly ski open water and wakeboard. Some barefooting.
Thanks for any advice.

I think you'll see the LX around for a few years mostly as
the "Wakesetter", but expect to see a replacement for that
boat in 2000 or 20001 at the latest. IT is well built boat
with a solid popularity base so resale shouldn't be a big
deal.

As for differences, I tested the 99 (check Dejanews for the
review or email me) LX and while I bought a Response, I was
surprised to see very little difference in wakes. The LXi
I've been in but not skied. Nicer boat with more storage,
looks, etc. but I wouldn't expect it to be that much better
than the LX. YMMV

The Sunsetter is a Great boat. The LXi is pretty much the same boat as the
LX other than the rear trunk open from the top instead of behind the rear
seat. The side storage on the LXi has combing pads on the floor and the LX
nets. I have to raise my back seat to make a sunpad. The LXi is there all
the time.
There is some other minor changes but basically the same boat. I have a 98
Sunsetter LX and very happy with it. I chose it over the LXi due to the
money I saved by buying a 98 over waiting for a 99 LXi.
The LXi is going to be higher of course its a new design, it is expected.
Either way you can not go wrong with one or the other. Lots of storage for
skies, wakeboard, ropes and other gear.
For these to big such big boats, you'd be very surprised how well they
handle and ski, wakeboard, and believe it or not it barefoots (yes,
Barefoot) very nicely. Top end on my LX is bumping 49 mph on a good day and
light load. 46 mph is no problem pulling a footer.
The only thing I dislike about my LX is the radio under the drivers arm
rest. Bad idea. I am going to change radios to one with a remote control
that can be mounted on the dash somewhere.
Other than that we are well pleased with it.

What engine do you have in your LX?

I was at Tilly's Marine in Ventura, Ca yesterday afternoon
checking out the LX and Wakesetter myself. The sales guy
said that I seemed to be well informed about the Malibu line.
I mentioned that I follow the RSW newsgroup and had picked up
lots of useful info there.
Brett Tilly said,
'Oh yeah, doesn't Tom Rosa, Rootha, Rowza, hang out there?'
I said 'you mean Tom Ruta?'
'Yeah, thats him'.......

So, Tom, for better or worse, you have been pegged :^)
I think they appreciate your PR for Malibu.

Cheers
Brad

I believe the v-drive V210 has top speed around 50. The stern drive
ZX Driver will likely do 59, especially when trimmed up a bit. I'm
assuming Merc. Black Scorpion in both. Other power options are
available for them.

Don't know of any other downsides for stern drives unless inability
to get short garage storage by removing swim platform is an issue.
Upsides are more interior room (compared to v-drive), higher top end,
and ability to trim to get through shallow water areas. They're very
good barefoot and wakeboard boats, but I'm not sure about slalom.

They aren't great to repair due to complexity.

Merc has gotten pretty good with their stern drives, especially if you
get the Bravo. Repair costs are reasonable, and seldom needed, with
regular maintenance. Overhauling a Merc drive is common knowledge for
most decent mechanics.

Besides, you gotta love that low-turbulence wake, and the trim button.

I would think you would be getting close. You are getting paid by the
number of times you post Malibu right :-)
