Denver Wakeboarder Wins National Championship

14-year-old Emily Copeland of Denver won the 1998 Mountain Dew
Wakeboard National Championship today in the Junior Women's division.
Copeland scored a 64.68 to win her first major title of her career.
"You can't believe the feeling I have right now. To win the
national title is one thing, but to win it in my hometown is just
great,"
said Copeland. "Coming into the contest, I thought I would have a good
chance since I know the lake so well, but to win it is a dream come
true."
Copeland had to compete against her older sister in the division.
17-year-old Tamara just missed out in the medal round finishing fourth.
Two other titles were decided today. Pat McElhinney took the
Masters title with Mack Weston finishing second. For the Men's II
championship, Billy Garcia scored a 60.00 for the win. Jeff Barton
finished
second with Adam Del Vecchio.
Emily Copeland's older brother, Bart, begins his quest for the

Denver Junior Wakeboarder Advances by Slimmest Margin

Bart Copeland of Denver narrowly advanced today in the Junior Men's
division at the 1998 Mountain Dew Wakeboard National Championships. He
finished third in his heat just .66 of a point from fourth place. The
cut-off was three.
Copeland, whose sister Emily just won the Junior Women's title
yesterday, is now seeded into Saturday's semis.
"That's really cutting it close, too close. But this is the
toughest round to move out of so I'm looking forward to Saturday," said
Copeland.
One championship was decided today. 24-year-old Andy Owings won his
first major title of his career winning the Men's I division. Owings,
from
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, scored a 58.35 to easily beat Mike
Capithorne's second place score of 54.67. Nathan Strange took the
bronze
medal.
"This is a big surprise to me. In the semis, I did not ride very
well and was fortunate. But today everything clicked. I'm really
stoked!"
said Owings.
Professional wakeboarders take to the water Saturday. Included in
the all-star group is Denver native Brannan Johnson. Currently ranked
fourth in the world, Johnson will ride for the first time in his
hometown
for a major title.
On the pro women's side, 16-year-old Tara Hamilton is the favorite.
Hamilton, the defending pro tour champion, has never won a national
championship, the only major title in wakeboarding she has not won.
Competition begins tomorrow morning at 8:00 at Sloan Lake in Denver.
