I noticed earlier this week that the oil pressure gauge on my 99
Malibu LXi with the 325hp Monsoon engine, was fluctuating as I was
coming back into the marina. It seemed to be moving between 20 and 40
psi. The oil level is ok and I was at idle/no wake speed in calm
water. I haven't been back out to check it at higher RPM's. I'm
wondering if anyone has had any gauge problems like this. I'm hoping
it's the gauge and not the oil pump.

TIA...Mark

This is real common! Just replace the oil pressure sending unit. I know of
3 Responses (mine included) that had this problem.

last year Kaiser Medallion was replacing some master control
modules due to defects. Contact your dealer.

The oil pressure problem is not the same. My master control module was
replaced because of tach issues, but it did not correct the oil pressure
fluctuation. Sending unit cleared it right up.

Mark,

I have a 99 Response and I just started having this same issue. I have
about 85 hours and will have it fixed when I take it in for the 100 hour
service. Which I hope is pretty soon ;)

Mark,

Don't want to scare you.. But. This also was happening to my 98
response which I chose to bring in to have checked at the dealer. They
found that all cylenders had low compretion. **Rebuild**
Coincedence???.. I don't Know. wouldn't hurt to check it out.
I had the Hammerhead and don't know if they changed gauges between 98 &
99.

I have a 99 Sunsetter LX with the 325 Monsoon. My gage did the same thing.
It was a loosed connection at the sending unit. There appears to be two
sending units, one on the port side one on starboard. The sending unit that
goes to the gage is on the port side of the block toward the stern. If you
wiggle the connection while it is running, you will see the fluctuations
down to 20 psi. Tighten up the connection and the pressure is right back
where it belongs.

It worked fine ever since.

Low compression can not effect the oil pressure gauge or oil pressure. If
they told you that was what was causing your oil pressure gauge to do that
and you needed a rebuild to fix it, then I would talk to Malibu. Sounds like
they suckered you.

Mike,

I was looking for the oil sending unit this weekend. Where
specifically is it located?

Thanks...Mark

I didn't know that...I'm not much of a motor head. But I do know they
didn't sucker me in. The dealer is a friend of mine. (I think???)
That boat is long gone any way.

I just looked at it to make sure...

Just above the oil filter on the left side of the engine, there is a pipe
coming out of the block and it has two transducers on it (one facing the
side of the boat and one facing forward (both painted black). The one that
I had to tighten was the one facing forward. Both transducers have red
rubber boots covering the connection. Peel back the boot and check the
connection. Tighten and re-cover.

If you want to make sure you have the right one, loosen the nut and wiggle
the connection while it is running.

Good luck,

Mike

And what a friend he is too........I'm not trying to make anyone mad. I just
stated a fact. I have built more engines than I could try to count. Low
compression can not effect your oil pressure.
Like you said the boat is long gone, so it's water under the bridge, right?
I would get a second opinion next time, rather than rely on you friends. He
is not a "Motorhead" either.
